lol omg. I made it 4 eps in. Is it worth continuing?

also, holy shit at all the terrible dog owners. Animal shelters already have way too much on their plate, but i wish adopting required a training class/certification that included stuff abt preventative care and teaching young kids how to responsibly interacts with them (not pulling tails, etc.)

a friend of mine is fostering and has had the same dog adopted and returned to them twice now.... i think people like the idea of dogs without realizing what it entails

this is why i could never have a dog... my future path doesn't allow for the time and attention a dog needs and deserves, and i couldn't bear parting with an animal, so i just don't get one, even though i'd love to.

It's not actually about people going back to work, that's just what gets put in the headline. Shelters say they're mostly longtime pets people are giving up when they lose their homes, or have to move somewhere that doesn't allow pets, or can no longer afford to care for them.

The biggest effect of people going back to work is that adoptions and fosters are down.

Yeah, I saw that once I actually read the article. That is heartbreaking, I can't even imagine. And a big reason of why I don't have a pet.

I will never understand how can people just return a dog or a cat like it's a pair of jeans or something like that.

I agree. My dick of a sister who never liked animals randomly decided to adopt two dogs, one being a pit with behavioral issues. Both dogs she ended up getting rid of - and I ended up having the pit driven up from florida because she’s an asshole and was going to just dump at a shelter, where she absolutely would have been put down due to her breed. There needs to be a register to prevent assholes like her from being able to adopt animals tbh

I agree, there's people who keep adopting and returning/abandoning pets like it's a hobby?!
A few weeks ago I saw a shelter posting about a cat being returned after less than 48h because "the cat was scared"
Well you don't say!

I remember an episode of Pitbulls and Parolees the girl drove over a day to drop off a dog and less than 24 hours later the new owners called to ask them to pick the dog up because he "wasn't the same as he was in the shelter". Like yea he needs time to adjust? WTF is wrong with people?

We've only ever returned 1 dog. We went to a local beagle rescue and found one. We were told she was great with kids, cats, and strangers. We were told she was completely housebroken, and crate trained. We stayed and played with her for a bit before we decided to adopt her. We were told she had been a breeder dog and was very "low energy ( ... )

It breaks my heart hearing about how overpacked the shelters are right now. There’s nothing they can do and they’re faced with the possibility of having to do what they absolutely don’t want to do!

ia about classes/certification, making it a little extra work would definitely ween out the people who truly aren’t made to be dog owners. Just inconvenience people and their true intentions will be made clear.

What I hate is parents who buy pure bred dogs and use them for hunting fowl, haven't taught their bratty children NOT to pull on the dog or harass them, then get bent out of shape when the kid gets nipped by the dog. Like, you have literally purchased a dog meant for hunting, but then didn't teach your shitty kid not to harass the dog and now you are mad the dog nipped. Didn't even bite, just nipped in warning.
