Omg i needed a place to talk about this

I follow a couple weight loss subreddits and in one of them the other day the op was ranting about how now that shes lost weight she notices "how everyone is fat" and she feels sad for fat people bc theyre "forced to be that way and told its acceptable" and how she "just wanted to grab them by the shoulders and shake them, sit them down and teach them they dont have to be that way and they can learn to love themselves".

It got a lot of upvotes but i just thought it was so disgusting, patronizing and counterproductive. Like if you acknowledge that increased weight is more a function of insidious economic policy then why do you feel like other people should take it upon themselves to up-end their lifestyles to lose weight. It's just awful how ingrained it is for people to not mind their own business when it comes to weight.

It wasnt surprising given reddit but disappointing given the ethos of the sub

Anecdotal but I've noticed a lot of 'former fat' people in my life turn nasty when they lose the weight as if everyone should be able to lose weight the way they did.

This is true in my experience as well, im guessing its projection stemming from becoming an ingroup member.

Buncha try hards, they are trying to "catch up" from the years of being fat is how I view it.

They suddenly forget how hard is to find the time and motivation.

reddit is soooo fatphobic and reductive about weight loss. i'm not surprised at all that the post was popular even if it was wildly off base (and offensive).

I was surprised bc the subs i follow are really welcoming and normal, they even encourage people to gain weight or stop losing weight if it feels like the person is struggling with it. It was def a reminder that at the end of the day people will default to that kind of fatphobia.

yeah i used to be a member in one as well and everyone was really nice but i think it was a matter of "at least WE are trying to lose weight." the disdain was saved for fat people who had no desire or motivation to change.

They're fatphobic when talking about fat women. If you're a fat gamer guy you deserve any woman you want if you're "nice" enough I guess.

Yup, the callousness with which I've seen the connection between obesity and severe COVID symptoms on there is so depressing. As if fat people deserve to suffer more just because they're fat and they've 'done it to themselves'.

Someone I used to follow on Instagram reposted a screenshot from some “health guru” asking why healthy people should wear masks to help fat people when they won’t even help themselves. COVID has really driven home what utter trash people are.

it's becoming so ingrained within me too. i need to log off. like i'm overweight and i'm terrified of getting covid and being blamed for it because i'm fat.

People like that have an unhealthy mindset about weight loss, while trying to preach they found some sort of secret that everyone else just needs to follow. It's sad and infriating

such an unhealthy mindset.

I know for a fact Lizzo is far heavier than me, but she is 1000% healthier than me - I couldn't do those performances she does on stage, and she sings and plays the flute? fuck I couldn't do that off the bat
