I asked him out (this was a big deal for me, obviously, lol, given my anxiety), and we made plans for that evening, so I was really excited. He came to pick me up, didn't say where we were going or what we were doing. So then we drove back to the part of town where he lived, that had a reservoir for swimming. I did not know we were going swimming, I did not bring a swimsuit. When we got there, his roommates and their girlfriends were there. Obviously becoming clear to me that this wasn't a real date, it was just a group thing. He didn't care that I had nothing to swim in, and nobody else did either. They all got in the water, hanging out, swimming around. I heard one of his friends ask who I was and why I was there, and he just kind of shrugged. So then afterward, when they were all done swimming and having fun and making me look like an idiot just sitting on the sand (and this was awhile ago, before I had a smartphone so how much fun do you think I had), we went back to their apartment, and all the girls just sat around talking, and all the guys decided to play UFC video games. I don't play video games. He spent the entire night staring at the TV and talking to his friends. I eventually had to call my parents (I lived with them, I was 18 or 19 when this happened) to come pick me up. Don't think I ever talked to him again.

Years go by; I was sort of still aware of him because it was a small town, and for a time he and my mum worked in the same company, we knew the same people. I head how he got into drugs and sort of fell apart. He was arrested for drug possession, and I think went to jail, but I can't remember. He was definitely convicted, so it may have just been probation. And then a couple more years go by, and a friend of mine messaged to say "oh my god did you hear that X got arrested for murder?" Which was crazy because again, small town, that sort of thing really didn't happen there. But as it came out, he beat a guy to death with a hammer over drugs. He's in prison now.

That ending wow. I whispered "fuuuuck" as I read the last part. To me, your bad date ended up being the best case scenario for you. That's super weird that he agreed to the date and then turned it into an awkward group hangout yet didn't talk to you all night.

Oh, I agree. Very very happy to have dodged all of that; him getting into drugs started not long after (to my knowledge), and I wouldn't have wanted to be involved. And of course, the idea of being with someone who would be that violent is awful.

But also, I've always thought like, even besides the drugs and the violence, what a jerk! To say yes to a date and then have it turn into all that, what an ass. I've never once thought "oh if only, he's the one that got away." Nope, not at all.
