I see people fawning over this and I loved period pieces but [Spoiler (click to open)]I also saw controversy over a r*pe scene being no big deal on the show. true? if so I'm def not interested

the show also leaned heavy into trying to make us feel bad for the woman (when she was the instigator) because the man "lied" to her and it was just... the last few episodes were real dumb

It was awful and very uncomfortable to watch, and took away the tiny bit of interest I had in that character.

i couldn't continue watching after that. it's not like it was The Best Show Ever, it was just mindless fun for me, but... [Read more]as a black woman i felt deeply unsettled by the rape scene and how it was seemingly glossed over. (had to ask a friend if there are any real consequences from the scene and she told me no.) according to the internet the scene was even worse in the books? so i guess i'm grateful that they rewrote it, but if they wanted some "betrayal" there were other ways to go about it without going that route. i don't know how the hell i'm meant to root for the heroine after she rapes her own husband.

this is part of why i hate careless race-swapping in media. the implications of that scene is disturbing for multiple reasons, some of which are historic.

The consequences for Daphne's actions should have been so much worse tbh. The writing could have been really thoughtful around marriage and consent and female assaultors, especially because Daphne was so ignorant about sex before and it could have been spelled out to her by one of her friends, or the staff member who explained babies to her, or someone else she might have confided in so that she would actually reflect on her mistakes and try to make amends. It could have focused on Simon too, and what his feelings were on it given that not only did wife do something to him that was distinctly UN-loving, but the stigma around male victims.

But nah that's gross let's not right???

Yeah, that is why I'm not watching it.
