This comment reeks of the fact that she has never truly worked an office job a day in her life. A 22-ish person fresh out of college has enough experience to have the respect of her boss? Roughly a year in an office job does not translate to "experience".

And what’s wrong with being an admin as a career? Honestly, these comments are always so elitist and snobbish and look down on a job they feel is “beneath” and lesser. I’m almost 31, have an MA, and am an exec assistant. I guess that’s bleak to you, too. Oh well, I’ll be enjoying my 100k salary at 31 in this bleak ass job I guess!

I work in media (marketing/advertising) taking care of C-suite execs (right now a CFO and president; preciously a CEO).

Sorry, I just am so tired of people saying sideways shit about being an admin. I had a BOSS literally tell me once that being an EA wasn’t a real career and only for people who wanted to raise families and not have a real job. People ask what I do and then when I tell them, will be like “oh so you just sit there and look pretty all day.” Everyone is always so demeaning and it’s like... I probably make more than you doing the job you’re shitting on right now. I also think it underestimates the “power” the role has as being a right hand to your exec - having access to their inbox, deciding who gets their time, etc. I know execs who couldn’t tie their shoes without their EA’s. I’m just v sensitive and tired of people (general, not specifically you) always shitting on admin roles

I think the problem is that "assistant" can mean a lot of different things depending on where you work and what field you're in and most people just automatically think "minimum wage and office busy work" when that's not true for all assistant jobs. I'm a paralegal and people will often be like "oh so a secretary" when I in fact have my own secretary (who is also smarter and works harder than most kids coming out of law school). It's true, it can be very demeaning. But damn girl, congrats on that salary!! I'll never see that kind of money!

Do you mind if I ask what kind of hours you have to work? I have to imagine that shit is pretty demanding to pay that much.

Yeah, I think you're right. When people hear that, they def immediately go to "secretary" without considering the layers involved in it ( ... )

I’m in the south but I’ve also worked in the north and west and depending on the type of law you’re in you max out around 75/80k. Here we max out around 60/65k. The range you’ve mentioned is the highest I’ve ever heard for a paralegal but I’ve never gone to a major corporate firm so it could be that.

I started at $22 an hour, it just takes time!! I think a lot of it is the industry and, of course, where you're living. But my first EA job, I made 22 an hour and my boss was legit Miranda Priestly (I recently looked at the glassdoor and there were at least 4 other people who wrote that in their reviews)

I know, it actually made me so sad because I really liked him a lot, too. He framed it as doing me a "favor" because he wanted to bring me onto the account side of things as an account manager. The most fucked up part of it was I fell for it and agreed to do the account manager role... and then he left our team and went to a new client, and six months later, my whole team was told to look for new jobs bc the company lost the account we were on. I went back to being an EA after that and will not deviate from this path again lol
