Indie Film Release Guide: September 25th [An ONTD Original]
The last weekend of September isn't the highest profile of release slots, but we've got several new film options all the same. A couple of this week's releases are theaters-only, but several more are doing simultaneous home and theatrical releases, or appearing in virtual cinemas.
Additionally, the annual New York Film Festival continues through next week, with films still available to rent through their virtual cinema if you're in the US or US territories, including Chloé Zhao's Nomadland, Steve McQueen's Mangrove, and Heidi Ewing's I Carry You With Me. Please doublecheck the designated streaming period to make sure you can watch the film within its allotted timeslot before you commit to a rental - some are a few days, but others are only a few hours, and all times are EDT.
The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. All films listed will be available at their respective sources on Friday unless otherwise noted. What you should know: Writer/director Miranda July is also an author.

Plot: When Enola Holmes-Sherlock's teen sister-discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.
What you should know: Based on the novel by Nancy Springer.

The Artist’s Wife
Stars: Lena Olin, Juliet Rylance, Bruce Dern, Avan Jogia

Director: Tom Dolby
Genre: Drama
Plot: Claire Smythson, wife of the renowned abstract artist Richard Smythson, is plunged into a late-life crisis when her husband is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and is in danger of not completing the paintings for his final show.
What you should know: This is director Tom Dolby’s second film, after 2014’s Last Weekend.

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life

Storyline: Renowned neurologist and literary giant Oliver Sacks is posthumously celebrated in this profound, highly engaging, deeply personal memoir.
What you should know: Director Ric Burns has been working on film and television documentaries since 1995.

Stuntwomen
Director: April Wright
Genre: Documentary
Storyline: The inspiring untold story about the unsung professionals, their struggles on screen to perform at the highest level, and their fight off-screen to be treated fairly and equally. The movie takes us behind-the-scenes and introduces us to the female stunt performers who drive the action and thrills of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster movies from the silent age of cinema to present day.
What you should know: The film is narrated by Michelle Rodriguez.

Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles

What you should know: Director Laura Gabbert last directed on the TV show Ugly Delicious in 2018.
