First of all: wait what?

Second of all: they're adapting hillbilly elegy into a film? can't wait for the gripping scene where he calls his gf from a bathroom because he doesn't know what fork to use, or whatever it was

He's not even a fucking "hillbilly". He's from a dead factory town in Ohio, his grandparents were from Kentucky. That's like me laying claim to being from bumfuck Alabama because my grandparents are from there and I visited once.

it was such a dumb book. i had to read it for one of my classes in law school and my only lament is that our professor said at the outset that she didn't like the book and was just assigning it so we could discuss his perspective. i kind of wish she hadn't framed it that way and i could have come to hate it all on my own.

He claims to be a hillbilly and then denigrates hillbillies (poor Appalachian people who have been fucked over by the government and corporations in many cases) for being lazy, then spends the rest of the book bragging about how fucking awesome his life is as a Republican basically.

yeah one thing i remember towards the end is that he argues there should be a way to identify kids who are ~yale law material~ like himself and rescue them from appalachia and just...let everyone else there rot i guess?

i also remember he made a big deal out of the fact that his last name changed while he was a child as though that's an indelible marker of poverty and a massive burden to bear. but i grew up solidly middle class and when going back through old yearbooks with friends we had plenty of classmates whose last names had changed during elementary and middle school. sometimes multiple times. you're not special vance!

His arguments are farcical. Plus the fact he used to work for Peter Thiel is a big fat fucking no. Also his wife was a Kavanaugh clerk.

i highly recommend the "liberal redneck manifesto" as a counter to H.E.

So happy to read this thread. I had to read it for book club and no one else felt this way. It was infuriating.
