I... had no idea about Pete Wentz.

Last time I had such a reaction was when I was little, wondering why Mariah Carey was singing at the BET awards and my mom told me that she was half-black.

I had never thought about Mariah being biracial until it was pointed out to me.

That's so bizarre because I have always seen Mariah as a Black woman since I was like....five years old??????

Same. I don't see how anyone can look at Mariah Carey and think she's some exotic white woman who happens to have very, very curly hair.

I only discovered Mariah wasn't white when I got internet, but I don't remember her with curly hair in my childhood

I think it had to do with her overall appearance (skin, hair color, etc)...

I was shocked when I learned Mariah was biracial! I grew up in a SUPER segregated area and there was only one black kid in my grade. I guess I just assumed everyone was white unless they looked very visibly dark? I’m not sure. I had like zero experience with biracial people and even when I learned about her when I was like twelve, I was like, “Well, it says here she’s from New York. I guess they just have biracial people there! What an exotic and glamorous place!” I don’t even know why I thought that-she’s not even from NYC. But the very concept of an interracial relationship seemed like some sophisticated thing that only people in big cities encountered, and New York state seemed super sophisticated just by being connected to NYC ( ... )

Same. I always assumed she was black/Hispanic. I never looked at her and thought white woman.

I guess latinos have a different idea of what is black than people from the us. I was surprised when my gringo friends told me they didn't think I was white a few years ago because as well if that makes it better.

Honestly as a kid I just thought she was a white woman with curly hair. I don't remember when I found out she's biracial.
