I was shocked when I learned Mariah was biracial! I grew up in a SUPER segregated area and there was only one black kid in my grade. I guess I just assumed everyone was white unless they looked very visibly dark? I’m not sure. I had like zero experience with biracial people and even when I learned about her when I was like twelve, I was like, “Well, it says here she’s from New York. I guess they just have biracial people there! What an exotic and glamorous place!” I don’t even know why I thought that-she’s not even from NYC. But the very concept of an interracial relationship seemed like some sophisticated thing that only people in big cities encountered, and New York state seemed super sophisticated just by being connected to NYC.

When I look back now it’s frightening thinking how much I thought it was normal for that level of segregation and poverty to exist and for black people to seem so separate from white people. This was in like the 90s in the Midwest and when I think of my childhood now it seems like something from the 1960s or something.
