This is truly one of those shows where it had so much heat/press its first season and just nose dived after that.

I'm still trying to figure out if this show was legitemately good in the first season, or everyone just fell for the hype.

I don't have the inclination to actually rewatch the first season to figure it out for myself so....I guess it shall just remain a mystery 🤔

it wasn't good per se but it was incredibly watchable. cliffhangers every episode, quotable lines, outrageous plot twists. a real honest to goodness soap opera. then it went to shit within the first 20 minutes of the second season premiere and it was just downhill from there.

It was definitely written in a way to draw people in as much as possible. Like, there was practically a recap after every commercial break in case you missed anything. I binged S1 for work (lol) and I was about to scream @ how many times Lucius said "as you know, I'm taking this company public" in every episode. YES WE KNOW

I think that everyone just fell in love with Cookie’s character in the beginning with her many quotable moments, that seemed to be where most of the hype came from, but it was hard to sustain interest in the longterm when the writing wasn’t that good, it was always pretty soapy

And it was well deserved. The writing for this show was chaotic.
I'll never forget the clusterfuck that was the Season 1 finale. After so many episodes about Lucius' illness, one of the main story arc of the damn show, the pay-off was the doctor saying "lol just kidding! We made a mistake. You ain't gonna die!". And then Lucious laughed like a Disney villain. I'm still pissed 😒. How underwhelming!

Yeah, that ending + what they did to Malik Yoba is what made me done with the show. It wasn't even a conscious decision. I just never bothered with season 2.

What did they do to Malik Yoba?

I meant his character, sorry. He was the only grounded character on the show, I think I subconsciously realized his departure was a harbinger of mess to come.

for real though, and you know what, drip drop still bops.

also, i am black, i am queer. BUT, the constant flashbacks to lucious putting a young jamal in the garbage can after he walked down the stairs in heels always had me wheezing.

i already know i'm going to hell, but jesus
