He is probably one of those people who now call Maryland & Virginia the DMV (which still means the Dept. Of Motor Vehicles - not DC the neighbouring states). As a Virginia native it drives me nuts and nobody ever said that when I was growing up.

Huh? I've lived in VA most of my life and many people around here call it the DMV. It's not a new thing? Are you from NOVA or southern VA?

I have lived in Northern Virginia most of my life, but also in Central Virginia for a short time and it was not a thing until recently and I hate it and would never call it that. I didn't get it at all when I first started hearing it on the radio (when I was in my mid 20s - I am 30) because I could not figure out why they were talking about going to the DMV.

I only hear it called that on the radio and TV news, never by people in real life conversation.

Idk, my mom moved here in the 1970s and my dad has lived in Maryland or Virginia his whole life and they never call it that either, it's still not something I ever heard anyone say in real life but I've only heard the news anchors and people on the radio say it in the last few years - they didn't in the 1990s or 2000s, unless the person is talking about going to the actual DMV.

It probably works because the DMV in Maryland isn't called the DMV, it's the MVA. So no one in MD is going to think anything of calling that area of DC/VA/MD DMV

oh my god people who live here who get annoyed by this are so annoying.

no one cares about your personal definitions of what is and is not acceptable to refer to a city as.
