They had to be huge since I heard of them outside of ONTD without any teenyboppers around me to educate me on the nuances of pop groups

They benefited from those early bts videos during X Factor days where they could be charming and their interactions could be funny. Teen girls felt they knew them

I honestly think it was just a vacuum in the teen boy band for girls niche and they filled it. They could have been anyone really.

I mean isn't that how they became a group? none of them were good enough to make it on their own?

I do think though, in theory, that not having individual star power is probably a key ingredient to a successful group - less ego in the way. having one star shine much brighter than the others is a recipe for resentment.
