i wish more chinese people would at least TRY to understand that criticizing the government isn't the same as criticizing the culture and the people but so many of them choose blind nationalism instead

I was friends with this chinese intl student and I cant even begin to understand that level of brainwashing and resignation. I dont think it's even possible to get the young generation to understand unless they already dont want to be in China.

It isn't just people in China either, sadly. I've heard from so many Asians that they think all this criticism is being lobbied against China because the West is racist and doesn't want there to be a superpower in the East, which, while probably valid, doesn't discount any of the atrocities committed by the Chinese government.

someone on Reddit explained it as "imagine your mom and all the wonderful memories y'all had together and then someone tells you that your mom killed 500 people and is a serial killer, and that she's a horrible person. you wont believe it because your mom is nothing but nice to you and its hard to see her in a new light." not exactly his words but the gist if the message.

so i kinda get it but at some point aren't you critical? if most people are talking bad about china then there must be something there. like we all know china(like any country) isnt a great place esp if your not connected.

funny story. i have a friend and was "like i left Kentucky, to go to china and i realized that living in china is more depressing than living in Kentucky" so she came back lol.

it’s a complex issue, esp with the older generation :/ it’s legit impossible to talk to them and have a discussion. the chinese government has done everything it can to limit criticism against them and to promote this image that the ideal chinese citizen loves everything about the current state of the country and should believe that china does its best for its people. honestly it reminds me of the level of denial from old white americans who say america is the best country and get out if you hate it so much ( ... )

They have been brainwashed and beaten down to submission since birth. They legit indoctrinate their children at school from a super early age with intense jingoism in the curriculum and discourage curiosity and independent thought. I'm probably going to be on someone's shit list for my comment, but that's a reason why so many Chinese ppl are complacent, have no desires in life other than money, their shows, their gadgets, and their brands. Not all, but gen pop. They censor out a lot of "subversive" media, but people actually can use VPNs to get past the firewalls yet they don't. The general population is very willfully ignorant, and anything that gets in the way of their gadgets, games, and shows are seen as "bad."

Also I'm speaking from experience with friends and family bc were displaced Chinese.

It's really complex. You know how in Russia, there is widespread nostalgia for Stalin, even those these are the same people who lived under his oppressive reign? The same is true for the Chinese and their attitude toward Mao/the CCP. China was legit a third world country when my parents were growing up and whether it's wrong or not, many Chinese credit the Communists for modernizing China and lifting millions out of crushing poverty ( ... )
