They've been banking on this - he claimed this on the Wendy William's show (last year I think?). I don't really get how this is a defense though, wouldn't you still be liable? It's not like he doesn't have a team that can read for him. This is like saying you won't pay your phone bill because you didn't read it

This is speculation so maybe I'm wrong, but I'd guess the rules around failing to attend/respond because of illiteracy had to be written for the people who *wouldn't* have a team of management or lawyers on stand by reading all their stuff for them. And even for those who did, not to penalise them for any failure by their representation to inform them.

Which then leaves an obvious loophole for the rich and represented to just feign ignorance, but legally speaking because everybody has to be treated consistently/be subject to the same expectation it's hard to avoid

It's possible. The credited song writer thing doesn't phase me, a lot of people who are "illiterate" are more like functionally illiterate where they can't read or write well but they can puzzle through some stuff. Like things are written down but they're riddled with the kind of spelling errors a first grader would make.

Also with assistants to write stuff down or even technology that transcribes text to speech it's possible he authored songs that way.

Anyway I would never make fun of R. Kelly for being illiterate, but he is a rapist piece of shit and I hope that he finally faces justice for what he's done to countless girls and women.

He could have come up with the words and just recorded them instead of written them down. People adapt. I'm sure eventually someone on his team would have just written down the lyrics officially.

This isn't the first time I've heard he's illiterate. People can talk and not read- as others pointed out, people could just write down whatever lyrics he came up with.

I don't think it's an excuse for the lawsuit stuff, just that it is possible he's illiterate.
