i actually feel like it's the opposite. the lgbt in their lives are "not like the rest" and those are the ones they reserve most of their anger and vitriol for. not mike and dave from across the street with their clean-shaven faces and gap trousers.

It's not one or the other, but both.

my point is that it's (slowly) getting better as opposed to worse in most Western countries

i guess because my family and their friends are very catholic and say/post outright homophobic things (im not out to them), i dont feel that there's a "widespread acceptance"

The phrasing was definitely terrible on his part. I'd agree things are better than they were, say, 20 years ago but 'widespread acceptance'?

It's changed more so in the media, people are called out way more when saying homophobic things on tv or in comedy as opposed to say, maybe ten years ago. When I watch sitcoms and movies from like early or mid 2000s I'm like surprised at how homophobic a lot of their jokes were, and they wouldn't be able to get away with half the shit they said today. Like it's still weird just how comfortable people were on TV making jokes about trans people and gay men back then and no one said anything, there was like no backlash then. It's just a lot in the media and hopefully it'll change more in the real world as well. Like more people are getting called out for having bigoted views about lgbtq people now, when in the past it was totally acceptable to say homosexuality goes against your religion and not face backlash but saying stuff like that today can cause people their job if you're in entertainment.
