Chapter 1:

Massu sighed and leaned against the Sakura tree. He heard footsteps behind him and without looking back, he greeted his boyfriend … "Hey Shige, what’s up?”"

"How'd you know it was me?" Shige asked, sitting down beside his boyfriend underneath the tree.

"You’re the only one I know who wears that particular scent. Who else would it be?" Massu asked.

Shige smiled in the soft, sheepish way that Massu used to cherish. He scooted closer and slid his fingers into Massu's soft hair. "You okay?" he asked

Massu nodded. "Yeah, I am. Why wouldn't I be?"

"You seem down, is all," Shige explained.

Massu just shrugged in return.

"Well, no matter. . . I've got something to cheer you up."

Massu wrapped his arms around his chest and turned his eyes to Shige's. He grinned. "Cheer me up? I told you I’m fine. . . don’t worry too much about me okay? Anyhow, what have you got up your sleeve?"

"Nothing much, I just made a call to a friend from school. He invited me to come visit him, so Alba and I made some arrangements. You and I are going this Friday."

Massu raised his eyebrows. "We're going to visit a friend of yours from school?"

"Yup, his name's Yamapi. Well, that’s not his real name but anyway, he's really cool. A little stoic but you'll like him. I just thought it might be fun to have some new people around, and I know how you like going to new places. He lives over in Yokohama, and you and I have never been there, so I thought it might be fun. You know, a little getaway from home, and we'll be going together. This will be our first vacation as a couple. It will be fun. I’m sure our parents won’t mind." Shige explained.

Massu nodded. He turned his face to Shige and pecked him on the cheek.

"Alright, whatever makes you happy," Massu said and stared ahead of him, looking at nothing in particular. Shige sighed.

"Remind me why we have to go to the bus station again?" Yuya asked his friend who was busy checking himself out in the mirror.

"Because if we don't meet Shige and that boyfriend of his, how are they supposed to know where I live? It's not like he's been here before." Yamapi replied without looking back.

"Uh huh, and why do I need to tag along again?"  Yuya asked.

"Because you've been staying in my bed for days now, and has become too much of a whiner. . . .you have to get out of the house sometime, Yuya. It’s for your own good."

"In case it has escaped your notice, I am out of my house. I'm in yours."

"Ha-ha very funny Yuya. . . You know what I mean." Yamapi said, rolling his eyes.

"Would you stop staring at yourself in the mirror? You're hot and sexy, okay? Shige will drool, be all yours, and I will never see you again. Take my word for it. This is what boys named Shige do to me. I’ve been cursed to lose all the men in my life to guys named Shige and my bestfriend is no exception."  Yuya said, his tone frustrated.

"You're such a baby.  Will you get dressed already?  To answer your question, you're coming with me because Shige is going to be there with his boyfriend and I need to use you."

"Excuse me?" Yuya asked, not sure if he heard right.

"You're acting as my boyfriend for as long as Shige is here. Got it?"

"What? No way. You WILL NOT use me that way."

"Yes way, you're pretty Yuya, and you’re sexy as hell. Simply put, you’re hot. But right now you’re not, so you're going to wash up, and then you're going to get dressed. We are going to the bus station and we are going to be disgustingly sweet and hang all over each other until Shige gets jealous and realizes he should be with me.?"

Yuya rolled his eyes. "Sorry, not interested."

Yamapi stalked over to the bed. He reached across Yuya's huddled form, grabbed the corner of the mattress, and yanked. Yuya toppled to the floor in a mass of pillows and blankets. He groaned, swearing over his breath.

Yamapi grilled in. "I'm not giving you an option. Hey, you know he's bringing a boyfriend, right? Maybe he'll be hot and you can take him off Shige's hands, and then YOU can be the boyfriend-stealer."

"I don't want his boyfriend. I want . . ."

Yamapi butted in, not wanting to hear the rest. "If you say Massu one more time, I swear to God I will kick you in the balls."

Several threats and minutes later, Yuya and Yamapi walked out the front door and down the street toward the bus station. Yuya glared at the other pedestrians, and when they arrived at the bus stop, he glared at the other people. Yamapi fiddled with his outfit several times before Yuya slapped his hand away and snorted.  "Stop primping. It's revolting."

"Oh shush. Now remember, when Shige gets here, I am your boyfriend. We've been friends for a really long time and we just realized we have feelings for each other that's more than friendship so we started dating and got together. We have amazing chemistry, amazing sex, and you're madly in love with me."

"Does this mean you'll fuck around with me while Shige's here?" Yuya asked.

"Yes. I have to make him jealous." Yamapi smirked.

Yuya rolled his eyes.  “yeah, yeah, whatever.”

While waiting, Yamapi would scoot closer fuss and fidget. When several buses have arrived and the illustrious, boyfriend-stealing Shige still hasn’t shown himself, Yamapi moved away and adjusted his shirt. Yuya snickered. "Who's the pathetic one now?"

"Shut it, Yuya."

"What's this Shige like, anyway? You said he was Ryo’s roommate?"

"Yes, you know how Ryo is but Shige managed to deal with him for two semesters. He’s very smart. He's amazing and sweet. A little naïve, but that’s part of his charm, really."

Yuya grunted. "You know, the way you describe him, he sure sounds to me like my Massu's Shige. Massu said his bestfriend is very innocent and knows nothing but books. This must be how they steal boyfriends, the innocent but wise guise.  But if it’s true that your Shige is the innocent, naïve type, then that makes you a creep, you know, trying to ruin a nice boy like that."  Yuya snorted.

"Yuya, how many times should I tell you that not all boys named Shige are the same? Besides, what do you care about my Shige, I'm not even your boyfriend." Yamapi said exasperatedly.

"Really? Didn’t you just tell me that you are for as long as Shige's here or until he comes chasing after you? Whichever comes first, right?"

"Shut up, Yuya. No bitching or mourning while he’s here. You have to make the impression that you're madly in love with me."

"Ugh, I seriously hate you right now, you know that?"

A bus pulled into the station. Yamapi jumped to his feet, grabbed Yuya's hand and yanked him up.  Yuya was about to roll his eyes when Yamapi poked him in the ribs and pointed.

"That's him. That’s Shige. Hmm, that guy with him must be his boyfriend then."

Yuya frowned and looked across the people getting off the bus for a couple of guys.  True enough, there was a guy whose fingers are currently intertwined with another guy, sporting highlights in his hair.  He ripped his hand from Yamapi's and wrapped his arm around his waist instead, scooting closer. He forced the brightest smile he could muster on his face and dragged his bestfriend and pretend boyfriend towards the couple.

"Yuya, what the hell?"

"Shut up, Pi."

-----------------------------------------

The bus ride to Yokohama dragged. Massu spent most of his time staring out the window.

Yokohama. The last time he heard of that town it'd been from Yuya, his roommate in college and former lover. Glancing at his boyfriend in the seat beside him, he tried to smile and tried not to think about Yuya anymore. He sighed. It was a thing of the past that was best forgotten anyway. This was supposed to be a fun time for him and Shige.  He'd get to meet one of Shige's school friends. They'd be away from HOME for a few days. He didn't have to brood. What did it matter if this was his ex-boyfriend's hometown anyway? It was a big place. He wouldn't run into Yuya, would he? It just couldn't happen, and if it did . . . the awkward scenario would be more than he could take, especially since he had failed to mention his ex-boyfriend's existence to Shige in the first place.

Before school was over, he finally decided to tell Shige everything when he sees him again-about his sexuality, about how he felt, and he just missed him too much to let it pass . . . he'd loved Shige for so long he couldn't miss the opportunity to get everything he'd ever wanted from his bestfriend.

Gah, screw it. There was no other explanation; he was a fucking idiot. This thing with Shige . . . he thought it would be everything with him and more when they finally got together but it didn't compare to what he had with Yuya. Maybe if he had chosen to go to the same university as Shige, he wouldn’t be in this dilemma. He wouldn’t meet Yuya and the feelings he had harbored for Shige would not be in question.

He had been crushing on his bestfriend since God knows how long but couldn’t find the nerve to confess especially when he had never told him about his sexual preferences, so he kept it all to himself, for fear of getting rejected and losing him. Then after graduation, he got accepted at the University where he had met his roommate Yuya at the dorm.  All throughout that time, he was pining over his bestfriend and object of affection and when he and Yuya became friends, he started talking about him. However, despite his loneliness for Shige, there was an undeniable attraction between him and Yuya and after two or three months of becoming just roommates and friends, they started dating and soon enough, they became known as the cutest couple in the campus.  They had a blissful relationship. Yuya was very sweet and Massu loved every moment they spent together. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, because despite being happy with his relationship with Yuya, Massu still couldn’t forget the feelings he had harbored for so long for his bestfriend. And so he has resolved that he would tell him the truth about the feelings he had kept to himself when he comes home for the summer.

And so, at the end of the term, still believing that he loves his bestfriend more than anything in the world, Massu broke up with Yuya and went back home, intent on confessing his undying love to his bestfriend, and now that they are dating, his  traitorous thoughts are with Yuya. Everything they'd shared, all those nights together . . . he now knows that somewhere along the line, he had fallen for Yuya and what he felt for Shige wasn't even half of it, and he was an idiot because after the novelty of confessing his supposed undying love to his bestfriend since forever and getting hooked up with him had worn off, he started missing Yuya and couldn’t stop thinking about him.

But Yuya probably wanted nothing more to do with him after the way he had treated him. He just pulled away, cut him out of his life. Everything he'd thought it would be with Shige was what he'd already had with Yuya, and he had been stupid enough to destroy it.  He had been an idiot to throw everything away.  Now, they are on their way to Yokohama, Yuya’s hometown. Massu prayed it was a big place.

Yuya . . . God he misses him.  It was like those horrible, corny love songs, he thought, where he couldn't go on without the very person of his life and it tears him apart that he misses the smiles, the touch, the sideway glances, the beauty that was Yuya.  He thought about every single day he had spent since he left and it felt like he was dying inside with every second that passed. It was all his fault for thinking Shige was "the one" without realizing he already had the love of his life right under his nose. . . . an error in his judgment that he never noticed because he was too preoccupied with "what ifs" and "maybes" to recognize reality.

As the bus pulled into the station, he got up from his seat and took his bag from the overhead compartment. He followed Shige down the aisle and took a deep breath before stepping off the bus. He watched Shige as he scanned the station, and then his eyes darkened for a second before they brightened again. Massu frowned.

"There he is," said Shige. He grabbed Massu's arm, and started dragging him through the crowd. He followed Shige's gaze to a tall, pale and very attractive man. Massu's stomach dropped to his knees. He was attached to a beaming Yuya, whose arm was wrapped around Yamapi’s waist.

Out of all the Yamapis in the world, Shige's friend Yamapi just had to be the one who wasn't actually named Yamapi and happened to be Yuya’s bestfriend.  Oh, the irony of it all.
