Kenny is a little better. He is terribly weak; we are just now beginning to understand how devastating this illness was/is. But he has periods of alertness that are mingled with pleasure. I'm betting that his stomach has not entirely quit working, as the drainage has gone from 2 liters the first day (1 liter is normal, they tell me), to 50 ml today. I believe that the J Tube is giving him calories, and therefore life. Which is what he wants, and therefore what I strive to help him with. I can take a shower without crying. Although I am not reconciled to my decision to potentially (probably) take away his ability to really eat orally, I have two friends who have the same condition and I now have the courage to ask them about coping. We have meals promised for two weeks from my department. No family has ever had such an international gastronimic experience; the irony is not lost on me.
