The original 1989 Batman trailer, though it holds a special place in my heart (as it is, of course, one of my all-time favourite movies, and therefore can do no wrong) is not, I must confess, a marvel of cinematic genius. Half the trailer works, and half of it just leaves me wondering what the blazes the people in the editing suites were thinking when they were cutting it. Did they know they'd kick the living crap out of everyone that year anyway, and just go with what they had, thinking it was enough? I'll never know.
To that end, I give you a rather masterfully recut trailer, which can be seen below. Everyone gets their moment to shine, the sound edits work, the quick-cuts complement the theatricality of the film, and finally (most importantly), Keaton's name gets thrown at viewers first. See, in the original trailer, it was Nicholson and *then* Keaton, which makes sense, as Nicholson was (and arguably still is) the biggest name around in Hollywood, and received top-billing simply due to who he was. Which, compared to the then only up-and-coming Keaton makes sense. But the film was called 'Batman', not 'The Joker'.
Nevertheless, here's the wonderfully recut trailer, for everyone to enjoy:
