Stumbling on Bloginess

Nov 23, 2006 23:02

I am always thinking of things to blog about. Lately I have been having trouble finding the time. Tonight I had time. I sat down and read 49 comic strips at Sinfest. Then I made sure I was caught up on the astronomy picture of the day. Following that I read all of my regular blogs, and then finally I watched two episodes of Ask A NinjaSo ( Read more... )

So I had to think about this a long time. I admit the whole 'past me' and 'future me' concept was confusing for me. It just seems like he's taking something really simple (making plans) and complicating it. He's also basing his queries on the premise that all his readers are unhappy with the decisions they've made. I'm not. I wanted a house and two kids and I have them. Either this is about having unrealistic expectations, or else it's an attempt to, as you say, be clever. I find the idea that we can control our future rather silly. All we can do is try our best, and hope a tire doesn't fly off a truck on the freeway and kill us (that really happened here, in 1988). And I also think happiness is dependent on having reasonable expectations. Happiness is a cup of tea on a chilly day.

"we think we know what we will want in the future but that vision is never perfect"

Can't think of a more unrealistic expectation than perfection. mis dos centavos

In more important news, there's no BSG for two weeks. 8-(

I am not sure if he is saying that everyone is unhappy. But that is an interesting observation. See my next post about rationalization (based on the same text). I may wirte that tonight. NO Galactica for two weeks! gah.

I had a couple takes on this, dropped them all. I don't generally find these types of books life enhancing. But subjective thinking I get. It's all tied up in Ayn Rand love and she was (frankly) a twit.

If you're self aware, I think you will experience less of this than someone who hides from themselves. Are you really a different person in the future? Everyone is changed by experience - stimuli generates response - the alternative to this is being dead. So, duh. But does this lead to an explanation of why your pov's may change?

I don't think so. I find a lot of people, when discussing things, will say "I don't know why I ...." enter whatever. And they want to rush to a solution or a change without answering the why. The scariest thing appears to be knowing and accepting who you are, even if who you are isn't who you think you should be.
