To paraphrase the legendary Rob Gordon from the film High Fidelity...
"It is not who you are, but what you like. Books, music, movies... these things matterI was thinking tonight (largely because I cannot sleep) about why I like the things I like. That was far too large a question, so I decided to think about where those likes and dislikes came ( Read more... )

Yeah... "I am the hungry wolf..." Let me give you the opportunity to post another comment by asking how you fell in love wuth the teen drama. Also, don't we both have kids that are going to be awake in a bout 6 hours?

One of my children is up there in your neck of the woods, visiting his loving grandparents, so I can get up with my little one and then go back to sleep with her when she naps. Lucky me!

Teen drama? Like on television, you mean? Or in books? I was a dedicated 90210 fan, and had 90210 parties at my apartment every Wednesday night. The parties usually extended nearly to my 8:00am class. What fun! Those were the days. I like it because it is generally light and fun. I watch television to relax (well, I actually don't generally watch television, but if I do, it is to relax). I don't want to get all tense and irritated, which is what happens if I watch The Amazing Race. I only watched part of that, once. That's not calming!

I'm babbling now, and I have things to do before I sleep.

I remember Maria Stevens trying to get me to listen to Cocteau Twins during the one and only class that I skipped in high school. I felt awful about skipping class, and was exceedingly nervous the entire time, and still feel guilty about it. I associate Cocteau Twins with that uncomfortable hour of my life, so I've never liked them.

That's hardly a story of fandom, but that's what I thought of when I read this post. Probably because I suspect that you influenced Maria in the whole Cocteau Twins thing, you being older and more worldly than us class of 89-ers.

Should that be "we class of 89-ers"? Or perhaps "we class of 89-ers were"?

I am not a huge Queen fan, like my college roommate, but I've always really liked them. I saw "Princes of the Universe" on M-tv and ended up borrowing the album from Javi. I was only a sophomore, so I felt very cool because he not only spoke to me but also loaned me an actual record. Thus, whenever I hear any song from that album, I think of Javi. And also Highlander. And also Flash Gordon. And my college roommate. And my college boyfriend. Queen is rife with associations!

You are catching up, and it is great material! I did in fact introduce Maria to the Cocteau Twins (and even if i didn't she is not here to contradict me).

Who knows? My dad bought me the 'Fellowship of the Ring' when I was 13. I have read it at least once every five years since. My sister, on the other hand, couldn't care less about Frodo or the movies or any of it. She loves the original Star Trek's, and I enjoy those a little, but I think I could live without it. Being without Middle Earth would leave a big hole in my universe ( ... )

My wife and I love waking Ned Devine as well... If you need to tease your sister, tell her the 'Law and Order' is the new 'Matlock'. Thanks for sharing
