To paraphrase the legendary Rob Gordon from the film High Fidelity...
"It is not who you are, but what you like. Books, music, movies... these things matterI was thinking tonight (largely because I cannot sleep) about why I like the things I like. That was far too large a question, so I decided to think about where those likes and dislikes came ( Read more... )

Who knows? My dad bought me the 'Fellowship of the Ring' when I was 13. I have read it at least once every five years since. My sister, on the other hand, couldn't care less about Frodo or the movies or any of it. She loves the original Star Trek's, and I enjoy those a little, but I think I could live without it. Being without Middle Earth would leave a big hole in my universe.

My sis has always loved Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - I never found anything special about them - my passion is for Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull, and classical music.
I love 'Buffy', she likes 'Law & Order'. We really share no book/movie/music interests in common (except for 'Waking Ned Devine'!).

But DNA doesn't explain the differences - my 35-yr-old son [who was adopted and whom I found a few years ago], loves Jethro Tull, LOTR, and does calligraphy, as do I.

I used to think that I liked certain books ('The Secret Garden') because my mom used to read them to us - but again, my sister would rather read Suze Orman.

The things I love were created by other people. I just like to think that they are people I would have been best friends with had I known them as children... kindred spirits.

Interesting question.

My wife and I love waking Ned Devine as well... If you need to tease your sister, tell her the 'Law and Order' is the new 'Matlock'. Thanks for sharing
