we gathered round the radio
our backs against the window
as we listened for reports
on the weather
ecclesiastes stumbled in
holding whiskey bourbon in his hands
and mumbling about a rainstorm
but we all just turned our heads
hours passed staring the speakers down
it was midnight when i raised my head
i hadn't heard you crying
but your face was wet
distracted by our mission
we were frantically repenting
we somehow missed the forecast
we'd been warned

quietly, quickly
we drew each other closer
solomon shivered in the corner by the door

under the blanket like a steeple
we turned our heads to jesus
and we asked him all the questions
that we never knew we had
would we ever be forgiven
if we never knew our names?
and we prayed for the answers
and we listened
and waited for the rain

a demolition, a demonstrated
ideology
in the form of the last straw
on your back
when leaving's not an option, oh
we surround ourselves with what we know
take it all for granted
and hold fast

breathe in, go slow
give yourself permission
solomon whispered a song we used to know

under the blanket like a steeple
we turned our heads to jesus
and we asked him all the questions
that we'd never even known
are we doomed to be our fathers?
and should we cry with joy or shame?
and we prayed for the answers
and we listened
and waited

we spend our lives waiting to be born again
we take our time settling the debts we've made
when we stave off the loneliness of growing
with the places we call home
and who we are alone
we are only as alive as
the stories we allow to survive

we gathered round the radio
our backs against the window
and we listened for reports
on the weather...

quietly, quickly
together in the darkness
solomon left as the rain began to fall

under the blanket like a steeple
we turned our heads to jesus
and we asked him all the questions
that we always yearned to know
would we learn to love each other
if we never loved ourselves?
and we prayed for the answers
and we listened, and waited for...
