BOOK REVIEW
INSURGENT - VERONICA ROTH

I give the book a 5 out of 5 stars!

I wanted to strangle the main character in this book like THE MAJORITY of the time. It's only after she's been put in the position where she's about to die when she stops annoying me. Pretty much the whole time Tris has this whole Martyr routine down to a science where she keeps putting herself in the line of fire not caring to protect her own life in the process and forgetting that she has a whole bunch of people who she would be hurting if she just up and died. She kept pushing Tobias away pretty much by not telling him the truth of what she was feeling. Then, when he tells her to wake up and stop being so stupid, she gets angry at him for giving her an ultimatum. He isn't wrong though, what she did was VERY stupid and before the traumatic events from the simulation attack, Tris would never have done it.

There are so many levels of good and evil in this particular part of the series. One minute I knew for sure who I wanted to hate in the series. Then another person pops up, followed by another. Then there are the characters who I had hated beofre, but then they are just now starting to grow on me. Peter, for instance. Though his reasons behind saving Tris were slightly skewed, he did save her. Meaning somewhere in that crazy polluted mind of his, is someone worthy of doing good.

The character that really threw me for a loop was Caleb. This is the second novel that I've read recently where the brother of the main character betrays his sister. And like the other book, I did NOT expect it. Caleb had seemed so personable, especially after the death of their parents. I thought for sure he was on the good side, but Jeanine had her claws in him like so many other helpless Erudite. The fact that he chose his faction over his own blood though is annoyingly depressing.

There were two different serums that were administered in Tris that were a novelty of each faction. The Amity "peace" serum and the Candor "truth" serum. I think though that the Amity part was the funniest because Tris was pretty much higher than a kite after the person gave it to her. They had failed to account for her small body weight and it made her EXTRA happy. I cracked up so hard during that part.

The truth serum, however was not as peace inducing that's for sure. It caused a huge rift between Tris and her friends. When the truth came out, Christina stopped talking to her and Tobias got angry with her for not telling her the truth. It was just a whole huge set of explosions that went off at once. Of course, not long after that the Candor are attacked and Tris puts herself in another life or death situation which leads to the ultimatum that Tobias gives her later. She also finds out during that attack that Uriah is Divergent also. That part makes me smile. I've always liked Uriah and this gives his character even more developement.

The factionless is another big hard ball that comes out of nowhere. Apparently, they have sort of formed into this huge battle unit that end up tricking even those that allied with them to force domination against every factioni around. I hadn't trusted Evelyn from the beginning thanks to Tris's observations. Even though she didn't have such good spidey sense about her brother...her spidey sense was right on when it came to Evelyn. The part at the very end though where the information about how the factions came to be and what lies outside the walls was earth-shattering! I can't wait to see what comes of the aftermath!

This second book of the Divergent series, while at points frustrating, was in all very thrilling. I do enjoy the cliffhanger at the end and I'm quite happy with the death of the Erudite leader who I hated with a fiery passion! I do reccomend the series because it is a wonderful excape from reality into the life of factions on the verge of war! I love it!
