Thought occured to me today. Any new MMORPG that comes out has a very steep hill to climb on launch day. That hill is the large quantity of content and patched quality that the established games like World of Warcraft have. Based on the chatter I see in global chat in new games, there is a good percentage of players that expect the game on launch to be as polished as World of Warcraft is now, after many years of play.
As a result, instead of the expression of wonder and discovery, we get complaints about the lack of X or the failure of Y, along with sour bitterness about the number of patches and such.
It's kind of like trying to drive up a muddy slope, after a bunch of 4x4s have churned it up and wait, tauntingly, at the top.
Anyway, that was my thought for today.
