Kyuhyun never understood why people loved to celebrate every single occasion in their lives with a party. He found these so-called events too much of a bother-and definitely too many-throughout the year. Holidays, weddings, promotions, birthdays… and of course farewells. Birthdays no longer held as much importance nowadays as they had been a hundred years ago, mostly because it was so easy to tell a lie about one’s age, but farewells in particular were frequently held, especially when the person was leaving in good terms.
Twosome's number one Jung Yunho had been the epitome of first-rate service for the entire length of his career. At the end of it, he made sure to say goodbye properly to all his clients, including by throwing a lavish farewell party with everyone in his list invited, just before the day when he would get married to the woman he loved. Kyuhyun watched as people crowded around him to congratulate and wish him good luck, often telling and retelling stories of their shared memories.
As if they would never see him again.
He kept himself apart from the crowd, lounging on the couch in one corner of the room. He was in no mood to chat-or even to acknowledge every admiring glance thrown his way, especially from the newbies and the low-rank boys. It wasn't everyday that you got to be in the same room with SMENT's number one.
Plucking another glass of cocktail from a wandering server and enjoying the bittersweet taste dancing on his tongue, he didn't realize that someone had approached him until the couch dipped.
"Aren't you gonna say goodbye to me?"
The corners of his mouth curved up when he saw the handsome man sitting next to him. "Are you leaving to a place with no access to a teleporter?"
Yunho chuckled and raised his own glass, offering a toast-which Kyuhyun accepted. "I'm gonna invite you to dinner sometimes."
"No way." Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. "A jealous wife is the last thing I ever want to deal with."
"She knows about you," Yunho paused. "Then again, who doesn't. But I've also told her about you. Good things too."
"Look, I know that you can't help but tell stories about how good I am in bed," Kyuhyun joked with a straight face, shrugging for emphasis. "All the more reason I shouldn't come."
Yunho shook his head, amused as always by the other man's antics. "She was my client, Kyuhyun. She had openly accepted my life-my soon-to-be past life-as a host. I was the one who insisted on leaving this job and--"
"Oh, stop, who are you and why do you want to make me throw up so badly?"
Yunho laughed. "That's what love does to you. It makes you soft."
"You can grow soft all you want now, but keep your new bubbly love life to yourself."
The taller man just smiled, the glint in his eyes hinting on a switch of the focus of conversation. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Love life."
Kyuhyun stared at him for a whole ten seconds before his expression hardened along with his grip on the glass. "Don't make me waste this expensive cocktail by pouring it over your head to wash away whatever ridiculous idea you’ve got in there."
"Don't think I haven't noticed." Yunho leaned close and whispered, "You and Choi-"
"The fact that you've finally found the love of your life doesn't mean everyone else also has one-or wants one."
Yunho pulled back and didn't say anything further. Kyuhyun might not tell him anything, and he didn't know exactly what Kyuhyun and Twosome's number two were doing because they had been playing it safe enough not to raise any alarm in the system; still, he knew Kyuhyun enough to notice the difference in his manner around Siwon. It was subtle, but still there. Every good host was a good observer, and Yunho had seen it since the very first time he had been in the same room with the two of them, during that photoshoot nearly two years back.
"Just don't get hurt, okay?" He reached out to stroke his friend's hair, only to get his hand immediately slapped away. Sighing, Yunho realized that Kyuhyun might have felt offended by the mere fact that someone dared to feel worried about him. After all, he wasn't the one being head over heels in love. But saying that would just confirm Yunho's suspicion that there was something going on, although that something supposedly involved none of his feeling. That would be what in Kyuhyun's mind.
"They're calling you," Kyuhyun glared at him, all hints of friendly manner gone as he pointed at the red-carpeted makeshift stage not far from them.
To part with hostility was the last thing Yunho wanted, but now it would be too late. Kyuhyun would keep his distance and made him wait until he finally acted like nothing was wrong and the previous conversation had not happened. Because that was just the way Kyuhyun handled things.
Particularly things he weren't comfortable with.
Yunho sighed, rising to his feet, and nodded at him despite Kyuhyun's unwillingness to even grace him with a glance. His steps towards the stage halted for a moment when someone stood on his way, posture haughty and challenging.
Choi Siwon. It dawned on him that Siwon must have seen him and Kyuhyun closely sitting together, and yet not close enough to overhear them. He could only guess-and from the look on his face, he had guessed the worst.
Siwon shot him a glare, but then stepped aside, allowing Yunho to continue on his way. Yunho took the stage as Heechul said a couple of words to acknowledge his achievements and officially took him off the title of Twosome's number one.
Then it was the time to inaugurate the next one in line.
"Choi Siwon, please step up to the stage."
Choi Siwon was a star from the beginning. A quick learner with natural physical perfection and exemplary assessment skills. Yunho had known from the start that Siwon would rise fast-and he had. He had reached the number two position under two years, eleven months ago to be exact, and he would become number one now that Yunho was retiring.
It would seem convenient, but Yunho knew that given the time, Siwon probably would have reached the top anyway, with or without Yunho around.
After all, he smiled privately, he had sat on the throne long enough.
They shook hands. Siwon remained unsmiling, eyes hard as cheers erupted in the room. Yunho had a feeling he knew why. His resignation could only mean one thing for Siwon: that he was robbed of the pleasure of taking the title away from the reigning king. He got it handed to him on a silver platter instead, and Yunho could very well imagine how insulting it must feel for men with competitive streaks like them.
They were not so different after all.
Then he withdrew from the stage, leaving Siwon to take his rightful place front and center as the first photos of him as the new number one were taken to be delivered to the clients later on. But Siwon, Yunho noticed, mostly fixed his eyes on one corner of the room where someone sat in what seemed to be complete disinterest to any ongoing celebration.
But Yunho knew better-because he didn't miss how Siwon would have his gaze returned every now and then, in small, surreptitious glances that were a bit too revealing despite the nonchalant facade. For Yunho, it wasn’t hard to read Kyuhyun’s expressions, even the layered ones. SMENT's number one currently looked slightly upset, if not infuriated. But hidden behind the long lashes was a glint of anticipation.
This, Yunho wasn't sure whether Kyuhyun himself realized it or not.
