So. I don't mind it when my teams lose after playing a hard-fought match, even though it's slightly more painful. What I DO mind is when my teams lose an ugly, slow match, get into fights on the pitch, and generally act like they don't know what's at stake. Fuck this shit. At least we lost away to the second-placed team in the league, rather than at home to the second-to-last team, that's the only consolation I can take away from such a depressing match.
------------Canizares
Caneira---Ayala---Albiol---Moretti
------Marchena-----Baraja
--Rufete------Aimar------Vicente
---------------Villa
That looks like a typical, balanced Valencia formation, right? YEAH, NOW LOOK AT THE NAMES. Marchena taking Albelda's place? Caneira instead of Miguel? RAAAAGE.
Valencia actually put some good pressure on Getafe in the opening minutes, with Baraja and Aimar both shooting wide and Villa a step away from nudging in a cross from Rufete. Getafe came back with a one-two that Ayala blocked out for a corner. After that, both teams lost some steam, with Getafe's quick breaks and counterattacks snuffed out by the Valencia defense and Valencia unable to recapture their initial momentum, resulting in lots of disorganized football in the midfield.
However, it was Valencia who struck first when Vicente (who had looked out of sorts at the beginning of the match) broke away from his defender and sent in a beautiful cross for Villa to head home. Valencia 1 - 0 Getafe (29'). Speaking of Villa, I would love for this kid to get the Golden Boot this season.
At 35 minutes, Angulo was subsituted in for Rufete, for some reason. I don't know if it was injuries or something tactical, but Valencia never looked the same after that. Angulo is USELESS on the wing. He's okay at the defensive part, but he doesn't know what to do with the ball there. Anyway, I had a feeling Valencia wouldn't be able to close out the half with a clean sheet, and lo and behold, a sloppy giveaway in midfield saw Getafe surge forward, and Moretti's challenge earned him a yellow card and gifted Getafe with a free kick just outside the box, which they took advantage of. The free kick bounced off the crossbar and fell to Riki in the center of the box, who had no trouble firing it into the back of the net. Valencia 1 - 1 Getafe (42').
After the break, a Getafe header that went just wide should have been a wake-up call for Valencia, who lacked any sort of attacking rhythm and were constantly backpedaling. Their first real chance of the second half saw Aimar set up the ball for Baraja outside the Getafe box, but the Valencia captain (in Albelda's yellow card-induced absence) shot high. Valencia were having trouble keeping possession and driving the ball forward. Without Rufete, the right wing was crippled, and Vicente wasn't exactly playing his peak game. Valencia kept racking up yellow cards and Getafe made three timely substitutions, looking to push forward and seal a victory.
Marchena, who was an abysmal alternate to Albelda, was fouled about 20 yards out, but Aimar's free kick was deflected off a defender's head and the keeper gathered it calmly. At 75 minutes, he was substituted out for Mista, who looked the most dangerous out of the Valencia players, which doesn't say much about the offense. A squeeful note about the commentary: THEY CALLED AIMAR "DOLLFACE." IN CHINESE. I WEEP. ♥
Getafe should have created more concrete chances, with the shite way Valencia were playing, but too often the ball got mired in the midfield. Riki went close when he rounded his defender on the left, but he chose to shoot from a tight angle and it went just wide of the goal.
Mista then wasted a golden opportunity when Villa set him up, but he wasn't able to control the ball after beating the keeper to it. Vicente then won a free kick on the left, which fell to Villa, who unfortunately felled his defender before kicking the ball in, so his goal was ruled out by the referee.
Then Getafe sealed three points two minutes from time, when Redondo was left unmarked by Moretti and squeezed Riki's cross right in between the left back and Canizares, who, up until now, had made several fortuitous saves. Valencia 1 - 2 Getafe (88').
AND THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE when Caneira fouled Riki and a fight broke out. Several players got involved and Villa was sent off for spitting (I think?), and will miss the next two matches. DAMMIT, SON. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT KIND OF THING. Anyway. A diving clearance by Ayala saved Valencia further blushes, but Quique's men will have a lot to think about tonight, with nine of them on international duty a week and a half from today and their early league momentum at stake.
If there are pictures I'll post them later. I'm going to go take some sedatives now; I've been yelling at the computer all afternoon. *pets Gregory*
