Forgot to write about the campaign. It was Phil’s campaign. We finished up the battle started earlier. Battles in 4e seem to take a long time. I’ve noticed that our group tends to take a long time in general; I think it’s part analysis paralysis, and part just goofing along and general unfocused-ness. At the point where we stopped last time, we were on the brink of killing the bad guys, so it was just a matter of time. They had over 100 hit points, but they weren’t really hitting us, and their minions were just about dead. Between Brian’s paladin and Kevin’s fighter, we have decent AC, so straight attacks don’t bother us as much assuming that they’re taking the brunt of the attacks.

After that, we rested, which replenishes all our hit points and powers and healing surges. Then, we entered another room. I brought over a battle map, which is a vinyl map that covers the table; one side is hex (which I use) and one side is a square grid (which Phil uses). Right now, the battle map is at permanent residence at Phil’s place, since that’s where we game. I have wet-erase markers and popsicle sticks that we use to show walls, and we use dice to show characters (d4 for PCs, all others types for NPCs and monsters). Anyway, Phil pulled out a pre-printed battle map for this room, so we knew this would be a major area. There was a statue in the middle of the room, a statue at each corner of the room, lots of alcoves with bones, a sarcophagus at the far end, and a door to one side.

Kevin, Brian, and Bill went to the other door, and Amy and I went to the sarcophagus. Then, the statues came to life, the lights went out, and something big and mean stepped out from the sarcophagus. I lost initiative, so I was kind of stranded out there for the first round, and one of the bad guys got a critical success when he hit me, so I wasn’t doing too good.

One of my encounter powers is a close burst 3 and shifts enemies away from me, which is nice when I’m surrounded or threatened. I used it and hit, so I shifted the bad guy away from me, then moved to the safety of the group. Problem was, the group was getting surrounded. Kevin went to one side of the room, Brian went to the other side, and we took a stand there. No minions, just five really strong guys. We unloaded everything we had against them, and stayed way longer than I was planning to, but we finally finished the battle. Phil said at the end that this was the climatic battle.

I’m also restarting the NaNoWriMo project.
