What are five ideas/concepts/etc you keep in mind while writing your character that you believe are essential to accurately depicting them? Why did you choose them? How do they relate to the character’s over all persona?

Disclaimer: This is, of course, things that I keep in mind for my version of Luna. With this I'm not saying others should keep THIS in mind when writing Luna; this is just my own reference.

1. She only had one parent growing up.

I write her in two different verses and in both she is missing one of her parental figures. For me this is something extremely relevant to the way Luna goes about her life. A father can never fully provide everything needed to fill the empty place that once belonged to a mother and vice versa. It just can’t be done, even if they were to remarry it’s never the same. Although she has grasped the fact that her mother is gone by OOTP, I still believe it factors in to the person she is.

My Luna is fiercely independent and that comes from the fact that she had to grow up too fast. With her mother out of the picture, she had to be the one to take care of her father. He taught her his beliefs and things of the like, but the crucial things that a little girl needs to know were something she had figure out on her own. That in itself explains why she behaves the way she does. In RP canon this doesn’t change as she grows older. Nineteen years later, and she’s still taking care of her father.

In AU the situation has been flipped. Instead of losing her mother, he father abandoned them when she was merely seven years old. It has had a long lasting effect on her, causing her to be a lot more bitter about things than she would have had he not left. Although she hides it well, Luna has several trust issues when it comes to members of the opposite sex.

2. She experienced death at a young age.

Death effects everyone in a different way. In Luna’s case she fully understood the concept of death even at such a young age. This is something I like to remind myself of when ever I’m writing post DH Luna. Although she tends to be hopeful and a dreamer of the grandest kind, one thing she is not is naïve. Her mother’s death took any of that she possessed away. She see’s the world for what it is, and despite her eternal optimism she knows that there isn’t always a light at the end of the tunnel.

3. She believes in people no matter the circumstance.

She's a very kind girl who cares deeply for others despite who they are or their beliefs. She's not quick to judge and takes insults/criticism with an open mind trying to weigh out all points of view before weighing in on her opinions. My Luna is very stubborn and refuses to give up on anyone who she has ever considered a friend. I don't care if they were her friend for years or only a few days, she believes in the good that lies in people and will try her damnedest to stand by someone even if others won't.

4. She has experienced torture first hand.

“I will overcome
In violence there's silence
Oh no,
It can't be undone
I will overcome
Knowing that I'm not the only one
I will overcome
It's the only way to carry on…”

This is one of the main things that factor in to my writing of post DH Luna. The Carrows’ relentless assaults on not only her but her friends really did a number on her. Although she never broke, or gave them any kind of satisfaction other than the pleasure they got out of hurting her, they took something she can’t get back. They forced the last bit of innocence she had left out of her.

That is why my Luna went traveling after school, to find herself again.

5. Her self-esteem despite everyone’s opinions is incredibly strong.

Loony Lovegood. Every time she heard it she would just smile and keep walking. Every time someone would steal something over of hers and hide it, she saw it as an scavenger hunt. She is not the kind of person to judge others or be offended by mindless teasing. When asked why she will plainly state; "People use others as their personal dart boards for one of two reasons, either to follow the crowd or to feel better about themselves. Wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure...I don't need to follow the crowd I walk my own path and I don't need to feel better about myself because there's nothing wrong." She’s herself period. Nothing more and nothing less.
