Mass Effect 3 Plot Leak

Nov 07, 2011 08:10

Didn't read the initial leak post at masseffect. So glad I didn't. And ever so glad the mods took it down.

I feel so bad for the devs who have put so much time and effort into this series. Heads should roll. I especially hope EA presses some kind of charges against the hacker who posted the info.  That wasn't journalism; that was a total disrespect to Bioware ( Read more... )

spoilers, mass effect

My best e-friend knows how invested I am in remaining spoiler-free. He actually sent me a preemptive e-mail at some ungodly hour last night warning me to avoid the wiki, because I use it for the Jacobfic.

I am so disappointed this happened, and now I feel like the few ME resources I do use are like a Minesweeper field. What if I start posting the finished chapters of my fic, only to have somebody leave a review going, "Well, we already know that can't happen because in ME3 spoiler spoiler spoiler leaked plot details!"?

That's why I'm not going to post any fan art to DeviantArt until March. Or at least, if I do, I'm disabling comments.

All it takes is one inconsiderate asshole to ruin things for everyone.

Jesus, what a mess this is. I feel terrible for the folks who unwittingly walked right into it, because at the very least part of their experience is thwarted. I'd be pissed as hell, and I really don't want to invite opportunities to join that crowd.

Also, because the my first reads a lot like waaah, poor me, I should clarify what I meant was I am disappointed this happened to BioWare. All the usual negative fanwank must be unbearable now, and how do you handle all your hard work being undermined like that? It must feel like getting elbowed in the gut.

We should do something nice for Patrick.

Agreed.

But at this point, would it feel like pouring salt into a wound I wonder? (only playing devil's advocate)

I think I owe him chocolate chip pancakes for something.

I just don't remember what for.

But yeah, right now might not be the best time to do anything for him just yet. Perhaps the best thing any of us can do for him is to not read spoilers and not have our enjoyment of the game tarnished by things that may very well change in the final products.

He also made a passive-aggressive plea for Liara in knee socks a while back. heh. Would that I could art.

I was thinking a little less "Sorry you just got the rug pulled out from under you", a little more "Thanks for everything you do as a friend of the community".

Ugh! Hit 'enter' too fast, editing everything today. Sorry! But yes, I think it's a good idea to let things die down some. Pretty sure he knows we appreciate all he does, but still it would be good to express it somehow. I'm slammed with classwork for the next two weeks anyway, but maybe around Thanksgiving sometime? It would seem appropriate then.

Yes, we should. Ideas? (I don't think pancakes digitize well, btw).

A nice digital thank-you card might do the trick. Conveys the message without being too overbearing.

If it helps, ask questions at Boot Camp. That's what I intend to do. I'm hoping some kind soul will take pity on those of us on resource blackouts.

It's good that you had someone give you a heads up. I didn't think about the lack of resources until this morning when I was polishing a segment on Amaterasu and needed to verify something. FUCK. I finally just had to say, "Fuck it. WIKI OFF LIMITS TIL MARCH. T_T Headcanon will work for now. That's what authors' notes are for. Just increase the amount of pseudoscience and beg for suspension of disbelief. It's worked so far."

To that extent, I've already written an author's note for the next chapter asking that no one review or PM me with spoilers and the spoilers from the leak don't count as canon until the game comes out. (Though I may leave the last point out. God forbid I accidentally imply anyone in fandom is wrong.)

That said: My readers don't seem too interested in leaving reviews anyway, thankfully.

I think the an Author's Note along those lines would be a great solution. I don't get too many reviews, but I've turned off anon reviewing and am going to stop getting review alerts since it's too easy for me to just read the whole dang thing once it's in my inbox.
