Well, at least I've decided store-bought stuff is. Steve has been reading a website that essentially talks about becoming a millionaire, but doing it slowly, and then through it found something about a woman who blogged or wrote or somehow talked about doing things to cut down on money she spent on groceries, and one aspect of that was she made her own salad dressings.
Now I must say Steve and I LOVE salads. We have one just about every day with our supper, so we go through a literal ton of salad dressing every year. Approximately. But I was noticing lots of salad dressing recipes in my cookbook, and finally said, "Hell, I can spend an extra 10 minutes this week to make my own salad dressing, right? And I may even make it again sometime."
After the success of my basic vinagrette last week, I started in on a new recipe this evening: honey mustard dressing with an Asian twist. I mixed everything up in a small bowl, got out the funnel, and poured it into the recycled glass dressing bottle I washed out a couple weeks ago. It filled up just about to the top, and I realized I was a little bit angry. This salad dressing is INCREDIBLY CHEAP to make. It's just a few tablespoons of mustard, yogurt, and vinegar, mixed with some honey and spices. AND I USED TO PAY $4 FOR A SINGLE BOTTLE OF IT.
There are still some kinks to work out, mostly in terms of making things a bit more spicy or adjusting the flavoring, but this is such a cheap and quick cooking project that I don't mind playing around with the ingredients. It's going to turn out like my stir-fry fanaticism: the more you make it, the better you get at guessing what will taste good with what. Hopefully in a few months I won't even need a recipe anymore. Maybe by then I'll be posting my own!
