So while we were out shopping yesterday, Steve and I decided to go out to eat (which is always a bit of an adventure when you're avoiding gluten). I wanted to check out Uno's, primarily because the experience I had with them when I first moved to Boston and knew I had Celiacs was AWFUL. The two times I went I ordered a burger without a bun. The first time, I was brought a pizza. A PIZZA. That's not even like a burger. So the next time I went, I made sure to get the waiter on my side, tell him that I'm allergic, it's very very important that there's no gluten on my plate, etc. And... my burger is brought on a bun. Grrr.
When I heard they were unveiling a gluten-free menu, I was wary to say the least. But we decided to try it. I'm really quite glad we did! The menu is not particularly large compared to their regular menu offerings (for one, there are no appetizers) but there are a couple offerings of salads, fish, chicken, beef... and yes, pizza!! I ordered the veggie pizza, and Steve got a deep-dish variety. The crust is thin but good, no bean flour aftertaste. I finished the whole thing myself! There were no prices listed on the GF menu, so we were curious as to how much of a price difference there would be between my pizza and Steve's. Normally I'm looking at an extra $3-5 for a GF offering, often with something missing like a bun or rice side. My pizza cost a whopping 50 cents extra. That's it!
Uno's used to be a place on my DO NOT EAT list, but it's certainly raised its status with these personal pizzas. Plus, I think it's a national chain (or at least not a local restaurant) so it will be a safe bet when I'm in a different city out eating.
Thumbs up for good pizza and good price!
