Life is good today so I am posting! Always good to seize on those happy moments. Also I am avoiding Wheel of Fortune in the living room.
I attended my first mediation today. A mediation, in special education law, is when you sit down with your client, the school district's lawyer, and a mediator who is actually an administrative law judge to try and settle your case before it goes to hearing. And I won! Which is kind of a miracle given the facts of the case and the nature of my client's mother (I represent the student, who is a foster child). Sadly, can share no further details, and also you can't really "win" a mediation -- but we did get everything I asked for as a proposed resolution! I was sick with worry about it, and it was even scarier than I thought it would be after the district's "general counsel" showed up (the big boss!). But it all turned out for the best and I probably a tinier bit better at my job now.
I have been cooking yummy things lately. I made a shrimp-corn chowder that was phenomenal, and also a cioppino that was pretty tasty too. Apparently my new specialty is seafood soup. Not too shabby! And healthy, and easy. A good combination. Brandon made a ridiculously good Peruvian lime-mint roasted chicken this weekend too. The only problem with all this delicious home cooking is all the damn dishes to wash.
We have been buying awesome things for the house! A new couch and a king-sized bed. We also put together an adorable guest room for future guests with our old queen-size bed and a bistro set. The room is decorated after Rome, with a black/white/red color scheme. I am quite pleased with it. My sister and brother-in-law arrive next month to test it out!
Um, that is all for now. I did jury duty last week finally after 3 weeks of being on call and was dismissed from a jury as usual in a typical display of lawyer-on-lawyer animosity. Oh well at least I got one day off work for it. Any day where you get to sit in a room and read your Kindle for hours and hours is fine by me!
