I love Halloween

I love Halloween, despite the Christian community's general attempts to convince me of its evil devil-loving ways. I don't go in for that spell-casting business or anything, but I can't help loving the fantasy and magical elements of the holiday, at least to a fun PG Harry Potter-esque extent. There aren't many days when people with big imaginations are given free reign, but Halloween is one of them. That is probably why I like it so much. Well, that and all the candy. This is why I roll my eyes at "Fall Festivals." I don't want to celebrate fall - boring (although I do like it as a season). I want to celebrate MAGIC! That's what Halloween is to me, Magic Day.

I like putting together costumes too, but not the pre-bought ones. I prefer to construct them out of things that I already have, or things from thrift stores. These are a few of the more memorable costumes I remember wearing as a kid, teenager, and adult.

1. Cheetah: My mom handmade the cutest cheetah costume when I was 7 or 8. I'm sure everyone thought I was a leopard BUT I WAS NOT.

2. Princess: My aunt made me a beautiful blue satin princess dress one year. I am told that I wore it pretty much nonstop until it no longer fit.

3. Elizabeth From The Bible: I had this old Bible-esque robes in my closet from some church play I was in one year. I wore it to my church's fall festival in high school, enjoying the fun play on words of being two different Elizabeths at once. No one got the joke though, and everyone just called me Mary. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WOMAN IN THE BIBLE PEOPLE.

4. Willy Wonka: This costume is infamous among my old church's twenties group. I got made fun of for years after wearing this costume, not sure why. I was the Johnny Depp version and I had a lot of fun putting it together. I already had a purple velvet blazer, awesomely enough, and Sara G. and I had constructed a cane for the midnight showing of the movie earlier that year. I also found a pair of purple gloves that I wore, although they weren't medical gloves so it wasn't quite perfect. I was extremely proud of it, even though the party I wore it to was almost epic in its lameness.

5. Inigo Montoya: Definitely one of my greatest costume creations, and I got to wear it at a very fun party too. I am still pissed that I lost the best costume contest to someone in a PRE-BOUGHT Jack Sparrow costume. Ridiculous. My mom made me a simple ivory blouse and brown vest that looked a lot like the movie costume. I also found some tight black pants and big manly brown boots from a thrift store. I completed the outfit with a cheesy sword, brown leather belt, and a name tag that read: "HELLO MY NAME IS: Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Oh, I also carried a handmade Wanted poster with a 6-fingered man drawn on it.

6. Elizabeth From Middle School: I found this tragic vest at a thrift store that I had worn my first day of school in the 7th grade, with faces of little multi-cultural children on it. Add in some pleated khakis and some kind of crazy cat bolo necklace thing, and I was ready to go. I carried a photo of me in the exact same outfit in 7th grade to prove how awesome the costume was. I don't know if anyone enjoyed this costume as much as I did, though.

7. 1930s Lois Lane: I spent too much creating this costume, but I still wear all of its elements to work, so that's okay. I found awesome brown heeled saddle shoes, a gray wool pencil skirt, and borrowed my mom's gray suit jacket from an actual 1930s wool suit. My sister made me an awesome Daily Planet press pass with my photo and Lois's name. I carried a notepad and pencil. Brandon was meant to go as my Clark Kent but, as I remember, totally blew me off and refused to attend the Halloween party. I'm still a little pissed about that actually, I gave him a hard time about it the other day.

I missed Halloween last year due to a little thing called my honeymoon, but now I need to very quickly come up with a costume for this year. Should I rewear one of the above? Or come up with something new? Decisions, decisions. It will probably have to consist of things in my closet, anyway, since I'll be out of town this weekend for our anniversary and have no time for in-depth thrift store searches.

Anniversary report to come! Brandon has apparently gotten me a multi-part themed present of some kind. Intriguing . . .
