2012 09 14 Yoochun Fanmeeting in Taiwan

Oct 15, 2012 19:06

I never imagined that I would fly all the way to Taiwan for a fanmeet, but Friend is a new Yoochun fan (just Yoochun mainly due to his drama appearances - efforts to convert her to love all the boys have been in vain) and she really wanted to see Yoochun in person.

Info about the fan meet came out in August 2012

It’s the first time I’ll be travelling so far to meet an entertainer and Taiwan is a totally new destination for me so I did hell of a lot of research about the place. Spent so much time looking for the venue (there are several Taida Stadiums) and studying the hotel options.  All thoughts of making it a budget trip flew out of the window when Friend insisted on staying in the same hotel that Yoochun is staying in.  Ah well, it’s a once in a lifetime thing (famous last words). We even sprung for the presidential floor, thinking that would give us more opportunities to bump into Yoochun… Friend would only arrive in Taipei on Friday itself while I got there earlier on Wednesday, and so I was tasked to always carry around a piece of card and a sharpie, in case I could get Yoochun’s signature for her. Cue endless fantasies of meeting Yoochun in person.

I spent the whole of Wednesday and Thursday doing touristy things, which led to me having a sunstroke on Thursday. Fans started congregating at the hotel lobby and entrance on Thursday night but as I had a splitting headache I tried to go to bed early … and promptly kicked myself non stop when Yoochun mentioned during the fanmeet that he did go to the swimming pool on Thursday night.. it was drizzling on Thursday night!

In any case, Friend got to the hotel around lunch time Friday, and we had lunch at the ground floor café - both of us kept sneaking out to the lobby to wait for Yoochun, then sneaking back to our table. The waitstaff was very amused.

It was a very busy hotel, yet we couldn’t keep standing at the lobby even though we were guests, as security was kind of chasing fans away. Some of their staff were milling around the lobby entrance trying to filter out non-guests..

Hotel staff : Hello ladies, you have been standing in the lobby for nearly 2 hours, are you waiting for a friend..
Us : Oh no, we are just being busy bodies, there are so many people here, are they waiting for someone famous?
Hotel Staff : oh, are they? Did you hear anything?
Us : ah, we think it’s a famous Korean star, we are also here for his fanmeet
Hotel staff : really? Who is it?
Us : it’s Park Yoochun, he’s famous here as well… he’s staying here right?
Hotel staff: oh, I don’t know about it (smirk smirk… big smirk…..)

In any case, there was a furor at the entrance signaling that Yoochun is back to the hotel , but he went straight to the luggage bay lift on the side of the hotel, and the security personnel all blocked the view. Some of the fans managed to take photos and I think he was wearing flip flops.  It was drizzling at the time but it didn’t deter the fangirls, they were well prepared and stood behind the barrier (yes, we were hotel guests but also had to stand behind the barrier), some of them brought collapsible stools to stand on.

Row of cars in front of the hotel lobby to confuse the fans

We met some friendly Taiwanese fans who rented a room on our same floor, and decided to go to the venue together.. 5 of us in 1 taxi!

Taxi driver : where are you from? Are you on holiday in Taiwan?
Us : we are from Malaysia, and we are here for a fanmeeting
Taxi driver : fan meeting? What’s that?
Us : oh, this actor/singer will be meeting us fans, some chit chat and some singing.
Taxi driver : what? You come all the way to meet a singer? Are you all married? How come you are allowed to do this?
Us : oh, we are both married, and my friend even have 2 kids, our hubbies are ok with this
Taxi driver : what?? That’s unacceptable behavior,  how can married women be allowed to do this? Who is taking care of your kids? You fly so long and spend so much money to see another man!
Us : …. It’s ok, Malaysian women are independent.. we can do this if we like
Taxi driver: this is preposterous. You will never see Taiwanese women do this! Their place is in the house!!
Taiwanese fans : It’s ok elder brother, we 3 are Taiwanese and we are all not married and do not have boyfriends..

Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe the conversation.

In any case, we got to the stadium and it was still drizzling… the wind was very strong and we later found out that there was a (mild) typhoon (WOW!). I must admit that I was very worried about the flights being grounded because my boss would kill me if I don’t report back to work on Monday - it was hard enough getting Wednesday and Thursday off.

We couldn’t see any official merchandise on sale, so we got some baton light sticks.

Although we got row 23, it was nearly midway down the hall.  Our Taiwanese friends got row 3 and 4!

The MC is a Taiwanese VJ who has a lot of experience with Korean Stars - Ken Wu.  During the fanmeet I thought that he was embarrassing Yoochun, who seem quite unprepared or uncomfortable answering the questions, and then I found out that it’s a common trick Ken employs to draw out more from the star - hence Ken’s popularity amongst the fans for MC-ing Korean stars’ event.

Yoochun walked out in a purple checkered shirt and immediately sang An Empty Space for You - one of my favourite songs. He is quite good live - not very powerful vocals but very emotional. Unfortunately that was one of only 2 songs he would sing for the whole fanmeet.

He greeted everyone “Da jia hau, wo shi Pu You Tian”. He looked faintly embarrassed to be speaking Mandarin, and in fact the MC pop quizzed him on his Mandarin the whole night (Yoochun performed quite admirably, and was able to repeat many of the Mandarin words even when surprised by the MC).

Note - Ken Wu is not very tall, and Yoochun was about his same height. I am sad.

Interview session
On a side note, although my spoken Mandarin is passable, the MC made many puns that Michelle and I couldn’t catch - only realized what happened after chatting with our new Taiwanese friends as well as reading news articles and tweets.

For example, Ken made word plays on crown prince (Seja in Korean) - saying that everyone had the Lee Gak (Rooftop Prince) disease, so they need to come to the fanmeet for Yoochun’s treatment - and massive increase in persimmon (sezhi) sales.

On how he spent his Thursday night in Taipei - Yoochun said he stayed in the hotel had drinks and played a dice game called “Xi Ba Dou Ah”.  I still have no idea what that is.  He also said that he swam/exercised (?? I think).  Ken taught him how to say Xi Ba Dou Ah in Hokkien, making all the fans laugh out loud. Also “ni shu le - you lose”. Yoochun was quite clever, insisting that Ken “ni shu le” instead of himself.

About what he did in his free time.. he said it’s a secret.. I have no idea why that elicited a big response, but it did.  … Also, Yoochun “sleeps better when there’s someone besides him”.

Standard fan comments like - thank the international fans for voting so that he could win drama awards for 2 years consecutively, thank them for their support for Rooftop Prince.

Rooftop Prince VCR
Prior to this Yoochun and Ken were already seated on barstools, joking and teasing each other. Then the Rooftop Prince VCR played, they turned around and watched intently, and all the fan girls screamed again at the view of his broad shoulders.  Yoochun was very aware that he was being watched from the back, looked very serious and also folded his arms (during the kissing scene).

Comments and chitchat about the VCR - Yoochun found the long hair inconvenient (while eating and sleeping), was very embarrassed during the elevator scene where they were changing clothes in the lift (took 4-5 hours to film), enjoyed working on the drama.

At some point of the night they did a game which involved the whipped cream scene, however the can they used didn’t work very well.

Games and interview (2 sessions I think)
Yoochun was very careful in selecting the fans to go on stage for the games - they randomly selected fans by seat numbers.

First game - act out scenes from Rooftop Prince - in the drama it was the hugging and goodbye scene, but Yoochun was careful not to actually hug anyone.

Second round, they selected the players by having the cameraman pan the faces of the audience while Yoochun says “Stop” to select the players.  At one point the cameraman panned to my face, but I was a bit embarrassed and looked down, and the camera panned to the girl in front of me.. in hindsight I should have shown a bit more enthusiasm, at least I could have gone up to the stage with Yoochun!

Second game - Cham Cham Cham with the toy hammer - YC learnt how to say “rock paper scissors”. All the fans won!

Final game - Yoochun was very strict on the rules - they had to make 5 turns while holding their hands like elephant trunks, look for and eat sweets hidden among flour and blow balloons to a certain size.  Eventually he said that they didn’t have to blow at the flour but can get the sweets in anyway as long as they didn’t use their hands - I think most of them used their noses to push away the flour.  He also walked away (backwards) when one of the fans approached him before completely tying the balloon. Yoochun was most animated during this game and even trolled the fans who couldn’t blow the balloons properly.

All this while Yoochun stood at one side and sometimes laughed at the fans’ antics. Don’t recall exactly what the fans received - one of the gifts were the radish dolls from the RTP drama - Ken said they were imported from Korea. Winners received his autographed In Heaven album, and a Polaroid photo - some were group, some were solo shots.  In the beginning, one of the fans asked if she could have a hug and was told No, then subsequently another fan just threw herself at him, nearly knocked him over.  After that all the fans got to shake hands with Yoochun, except the poor first girl who was actually polite enough to ask and be denied permission.

SungKyunKwan Scandal and Miss Ripley VCR - Yoochun went backstage, but lots of screaming at the vcr especially certain scenes in Ms Ripley

Yoochun came back on stage in a new outfit - white tshirt and beige cardigan, looked very gentlemanly (Friend immediately took note of the brand and wanted to buy a cardi for herself the next day but everything was sold out! Yoochun’s endorsement powers - the boutique staff told her that the entire stock was sold the morning after the fanmeet).

Chit Chat/Interview time
Yoochun’s recent trip to Hong Kong was for personal matters, so he shared a room with his manager. Ken tested Yoochun on his Mandarin again - passed with flying colours.

Comments about how good he looks in sageuk - he said that Song Joong Ki looks perfect in saguek.

MC : Would you mind a girl who has a past like in Ms Ripley?

Yoochun : I think it does not matter too much, the future is more important… [Pause]… if the past is too terrible, then forget it! (cue laughter from the floor). (Honestly, he’s such a mama’s boy, he’ll never be able to date a girl with a past)

About his ideal girl “Li Xiang Xing” - Yoochun fumbled for a while saying that he doesn’t really have a type - fans shouted out “Junsu” and he immediately said “Aniya…. He wants children some day so cannot be Junsu!”.  My fangirl heart nearly popped out.  Finally he said that the girl should be friendly and respectful of elders, and also healthy.. he really wants children!

Yoochun said that he has picked up Mandarin quite fast and should be able to speak much better if he practiced hard. Ken made him say “You yi tian ke yi chang Zhong wen ge qu” (Will be able to sing in Mandarin one day). Surprisingly Yoochun noted that “you yi tian” sounds very similar to “you tian” - his name.

This part was seriously misreported in subsequent interviews - many articles said that Yoochun is interested in entering China’s market and make a drama with his brother.

What he actually said was that he would be keen to take up a role in a Chinese speaking country if the opportunity presents itself (in this case, he was doing a fanmeet in Taiwan, so obviously he was referring to Taiwan). Also with reference to his brother, he was asked if he would like to film a drama with his brother - he said yes (Yes to drama with brother, not yes to drama with brother in China). Basically he don’t want to act as Yoohwan’s brother in a drama - they should be love rivals and of course Yoochun should get the girl in the end. Ahem… but then he also said that if he and his brother like the same girl in real life, he would not compete with Yoohwan.

Favourite ice cream - watermelon (I suddenly have a craving for watermelon ice cream, not that I’ve ever tried it before), best dish he can make - spaghetti.  Yoochun offered to cook for Ken next time, and Ken said that he would definitely look for him in Korea for the food.

Commented about his love for flip flops - Yoochun said he has 40-50 pairs but don’t wear all of them - MC told Yoochun about the famous Taiwanese blue and white flip flops (that everyone wears to the loo!)

Yoochun arrived at the airport in flip flops

Generally Yoochun made sure his expressions were very exaggerated throughout the fanmeet, to cater to us that couldn’t understand the language.

Showing a fanmade video for Yoochun, and all of us screamed Saranghae Park Yoochun.

Yoochun sang John Park’s That Song for the ending. Didn’t really enjoy it as we were not familiar with the song so it was not easy to imagine what it’s supposed to sound like. Would have much preferred Drunken Truth.

He closed the fanmeet by saying thank you again to the fans, and also taking a photo with the audience. Final part of the fan meet was him distributing presents to fans while Chajatta played in the background.  Michelle and I finally ran to the front at this point but by then he was nearly ready to leave.

On a side and totally irrelevant note, I liked his short hair, and his blue and white striped shirt and white pants ensemble. Very suave.  Couldn’t stop looking at the pix of this ensemble.

By the way, the Taiwanese fans were up in arms about tweets/fb posting following the fanmeet - apparently Mainland Chinese fans posted a photo of a Blue Ocean and claimed that it was taken at the fanmeet, and that Yoochun was very happy.  Seems like the Chinese fans unilaterally decided that Yoochun’s colour was blue, while the Taiwanese fans insisted that Yoochun only wants Red… something like Jae and his green lightsticks I suppose.  I only pointed this out because I wondering why on earth people bother to lie about things like this.

Back at the hotel, the euphoria didn’t die down as we hung around and chatted and made plans to meet with the Taiwanese fans the following day for some shopping and sightseeing - they are really friendly and we still keep in touch!

In any case, one of the random Taiwanese fans that I met earlier that day called me and told me that Yoochun is going to this hotpot place and we should go there immediately if we wanted to see him. One of the girls in the room rushed out immediately, but all of us were too lazy as it was still drizzling.  The girl told us the next day that there was a super huge crowd and she sat on an oil barrel, and on her male friend’s shoulders, and barely saw Yoochun.  Later that night I received another call from the Taiwanese fan who told me that Yoochun was returning back to the hotel and to wait at the lobby should we want to see him. This time we did pad down to the lobby and caught a glimpse of him going into the luggage bay entrance again.  Poor chap, such a big star and have to go through messy luggage entrances.
