They're doing construction on the streets here, and it seems like they've been doing it forever. There's literally construction going on the streets right in front of my house-- tearing the street up, pouring stuff, pouring more stuff, ironing the street... and it really stinks. New streets do not smell good. Not to mention it makes driving a bit confusing.
I still haven't looked at all the Hawaii pictures we've taken. I'm putting it off, because I know it's a ton of pictures between 4 memory cards that I don't feel like sorting through quite yet.
Day 2 Events: (Thurs. Aug 3rd)
[7:21am]
Woke up at 6:20am this morning, took a shower, and we’re now waiting to go on a breakfast orientation tour thing that leaves at 7:30am.
[1:46pm]
Back from the orientation/tour now. We got a free breakfast, and they explained all the different tours, events, special packages… @_@ so many! We booked 2 events to go to. After that, we went on a free tour of this place where they make all this jewelry, specializing in jewelry made from coral. It was called Maui Sea Divers or something like that. It reminded me of the Jelly Belly factory. Then after the tour of the factory, I guess you would call it, they lead us to the jewelry store/gift shop filled with overpriced merchandise. We opted not to take the free shuttle to Hilo Hattie, which is supposed to be a cool, but expensive/overpriced shopping store, and instead went back to our hotel, ditched my brother there, and went to the Food Pantry to buy some groceries/food.
The 2 events we booked were for a Hawaii Luau, and the Magic of Polynesia show. It would have been cool if we could go to this around the island tour also, but it would have cost way too much to go to 3 events. Plus, my brother and mom didn’t want to go. It would have been a great chance to take pictures, though. The Luau’s tonight, so right now we’re just resting up.
My brother’s taking a nap in the hotel room, and my parents are lounging around outside. I’m currently on the 6th floor of the hotel (our room’s on the 12th, btw, and the building’s 37 floors high) accessing the free wireless internet to check mail and whatnot. (We don’t have internet in our room, at least, not unless we pay $30). I think I might go sit outside in a bit, maybe on one of those lounge chairs by the pool and watch the cute shirtless guys, haha, j/p :p (There are a lot of guys walking around without shirts in Waikiki, though-the beach is really close by). There’s also a tennis court outside but it costs money to rent rackets, it’s too hot to play, and we could always just do that at home.
I’m outside now, and it’s really windy (but still warm) and I don’t think the internet works out here, so I’m probably going to head back inside.
[3:37pm]
Back up in the hotel room now, internet-less. But on the up side, I’m enjoying some of the mango ice-cream we got from the Food Pantry, enjoying the view from our hotel room-which looks out into the pool ;) , and listening to music.
[10:17pm]
Six hours later, and we’re back!
[8/4/06 ~7:38am]
I was too tired to write about how the luau went last night, so I’m going to write about it now. The luau that we went to was Germaine’s Luau, 27 miles from Waikiki. We got picked up by one of those nice big tour buses at around 4:50pm and arrived around 7pm. We were bus number 11, and our escort’s name was Phillip.
Once we were there, we got shell-lei’d, got our picture taken by the beach, which we later bought for an overpriced $20 because my mom wanted it. We saw the people unearth the pig which had been cooking all day from the ground-they took off the hot rocks on top of the pig with their bare hands! There were over 800 people at the luau!
On the bus ride back, Phillip tried to teach us a song that had like 30 verses, but we only went over 3, and had us play the “if you’re happy and you know it” game.
Here are the lyrics to the chorus, as best as I can remember:
Hang Loose
‘Just hang loose
Just have fun
Sipping a drink
And lying in the sun
Don’t you worry
Because it ain’t no use
When you’re in Hawaii
You should just hang loose.
