Liz grimaced as she bit into her sandwich and felt the distinctive gritty crunch of sand between her teeth. She spat out a sad-looking lump of masticacted white bread with threads of pink luncheon onto the wet sand. Disgusting. That stupid sand was everywhere: in her eyes, in all her crevices, and now in her lunch. She had been rubbed raw by it yesterday and her shoulders were pink and peeling from too much sun. She thought about leaving, but it had been so hard to find a spot on the overcrowded beach. She should have gone somewhere with fewer people. A forest, quiet and still, with wild life, not yobbos who made rude comments about how her ass looked in her bikini.

Betty stood looking at the ground, thinking. Was that a bear's footprint in the mud? She cursed herself again for leaving the path. She had just wanted a few minutes of privacy for a toilet stop. Instead three hours had passed and she was lost. It was starting to get dark now and the forest seemed alive with rustling noises that could easily be either a hungry bear or some crazy cannibalistic hillbilly. Why hadn't she just stayed at a nice B and B? She could be lying under a soft down blanket with a hot chocolate and a romance book, snuggling up, listening to the rain beat down on the roof.

Eliza felt a rush of air before the weight landed on her stomach. She struggled for breath and turned her head to see the biggest ugliest cat she had ever seen. This must be Sweetpea then. The land lady had told Eliza that he was was a very friendly cat as she handed Eliza a wad of paper with all the rules for staying in the Bed and Breakfast: showers no longer than 5 minutes; no leaving your room before 7:30 am; no TV or radio after 9 pm... That was as far as Eliza had read. She hadn't realised this would be one step up from living in a prison. Sweetpea started kneading Eliza's arm aggressively before turning himself around in circles a few times and settling on her leg, cutting off her circulation. She moved her leg hoping to stir him off, but he let out a low growl and dug his claws into her leg. Eliza sighed and picked up her book. It was a sequel to another book she had recently read and was so far a disappointment - endless descriptions and no action. She struggled to read the page but was distracted when a strong smell filled the room. It was the worst thing she had ever smelt - fish guts, rotten eggs and sweaty socks left to fester. She looked at Sweetpea. He had a very satisfied look on his face and Eliza knew who to blame for the smell. She should have gone skiing.....

Bess felt her nose dripping and tried to surreptitiously wipe it on her sleeve but she could barely move her arms in her too tight and over padded snow jacket. She had lost all feeling in her toes some hours ago from the cold and wished she had lost the feeling in her fingers. It was so bloody cold. The snow had looked beautiful and pristine from a distance, but was grey and slushy up close. She had thought it would be fun to slide down the snowy hill under she realised that her pants were not waterproof and her butt was cold and wet. Why hadn't she gone somewhere sunny, like the beach?
