I love it when mainstream media acknowledge subcultures in an honest way, earnestly evaluating their popularity and why they resonate with so many people. That's why my content-with-society meter went up a natch when I saw this:
Do you see that? That's the suggestion of yaoi on the front page of the New York Times, in the same frame as "Paul Krugman" and "Nick Kristof." I don't actually read yaoi, but the inner dork in me is all like ~ooooh anime on a legit news site and it's not being condemned for promoting anti-social behavior~
Too bad the article itself doesn't explore the popularity and emergence of gender bending romances in manga--it just mentions two titles the blogger is considering reading.
