So, if you aren't reading the Young Avengers comics yet, a) what is wrong with you (just kidding, guys), and b) HERE is a post explaining why you should start. riko explains the great parts of this series much more eloquently than I could (and with a lot less flailing over the boyfriends than I would ever possibly manage), but the long and short of it is this series has:
• a diverse team, including gay teenagers, robots, aliens and delinquents,
• beautiful use of Marvel mythology and hero legacies,
• ladies who kick ass and don't take shit from anybody (KATE, PLEASE BE MY VALENTINE),
• teens portrayed realistically and put into relationships that aren't super complicated just for the sake of drama (including a healthy, happy, non-angst filled gay one!),
• great writing, and
• when drawn by Jim Cheung, absolutely gorgeous artwork. The quality of the art in the minis/crossovers with Runaways is subjective to the reader, I suppose, but I'm certain you'll love Season One and Children's Crusade like nobody's business.
On riko's post, the links I checked are unfortunately dead. Lucky for you, however, I am always excited to infect introduce others to the beauty that is this team, so I've collected pretty much every serial/mini that focuses on the Young Avengers in the above zip. I do not have the entirety of Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign or Siege (I haven't even read any of them beyond the Young Avengers issues, for that matter), but usually the issues contain a summary to get you up to date on what's happening, and if you ever need more info, just come hassle me because I have a pretty good grasp on the general happenings of Marvel's universe-wide events like Civil War and Siege, and I'm always happy to help out (or, if need be, I can point you to more comic-fluent people XD).
The members of the team are featured in various other series (Stature and Vision become members of the Mighty Avengers at some point, for example), but these are the ones where the Young Avengers are central characters and the story focuses on them. I've yet to get off my lazy butt find and download other issues they appear in, but the information of where you can find them outside of these issues is available on the Marvel Wiki.
I've already converted about twelve people since I discovered them myself a year or two ago, including a couple members of my family who are actually involved in the comic industry (NO ONE CAN RESIST MY SALES PITCHES, MAN) and I just infected at least two people more this week (YOU LOVE ME, fifths). Even if you aren't into comics, I suggest you give these guys a shot. Once you fall in love, I also suggest going out and buying ALL THE ISSUES so you can a) have these beautiful babies in your hands (cradling the hardcover collection of Season One is a great experience, let me tell you), and b) show Heinberg that we want more than just the occasional mini and these kids deserve an on-going that lasts more than twelve issues. It's definitely worth your time.
