More TV Meme Anwers

I may not watch much TV these days (or none, if I'm honest), but I can
still talk about it...

5: A show you hate.

Hate is such a strong word...

The beauty about TV is that you can simply turn it off when you don't
like it. No reason to hate, just don't watch. So, apart from the tons
of reality tv soaps or whatever these things are called, which I'm
sure I would hate with a vengeance, but have never watched in my life,
it's ahrd for me to "hate" any scripted Tv show. If I didn't like it,
I just didn't watch it.

But sometimes there are other reasons to feel very ambvalent about a
show. It may not qualify as hate as such, but strong feelingsof
dislike are as hateful as I am willing to get. Let's see....

Certainly there's Lost. Back in 2005 when I was living in Paris
with no friends anywhere near and no lifetime I could afford, I was
watching a lot of shows that I hadn't watched before. Since everyone
seemed to be crazy about Lost, I gave it a try. I think I made it
through the first five or six episodes before I realized that I would
come to really really hate it, were I to watch anymore of it. First, I
just didn't like the characters much. I hated the fat guy - surely
he'd lose weight someday, given that they were stranded in the middle
of nowhere with limited supplies? Nope, didn't happen. I found it
completely ridiculous that everyone was always pretty. I'm 34, and I
sure don't look pretty when i'm lost on a beach without my makeup. Ok,
it's tv, but they could have at least tried. I didn't think it was
wellwritten - there was o much potential in showing how people deal
with a crisis, and none of it was shown.
Of course, that was before I realized that this was NOT a show about
people in a criss (think Lord of the Flies, which would have been
completely awesome); but a show about some stupid mystery that - ten
years of X-Files have taught us this if nothing else - would never be
completey solved, and would surely be turned around again and again
with every new season, only to drive everyone, especially the fanfic
writers, insane in the end.

I got out while there was still time. But I'm sure that, had I
continued to watch it, I would have come to hate Lost very very much.

I hated Smallville, because it was too shiny and brought and so
fucking colorful that just the memory kinda hurts my eyes. That's not
enough reason to hate a show, I know, but add to that Tom Welling, who
went around with his puppy eyes being shiny and waxy and so completely
fucking innocent... THAT made me hate it. It also made desperately
want to see how Michael Rosenbaum was going to corrupt superman (I'm
so not into that show that I barely remember the characters's names),
but all the fanfic I could find showed Rosenbaum as the redeemed good
guy. No, Smallville and me, we really weren't meant to be.

And then there is Stargate Atlantis. Surprise.

Yes, I hate Stargate Atlantis. I hate it through no fault of its own.
I'm just jealous, I think. see, I watched the first two seasons of
SGA, loved them, and then gave up somwhere in the middle of season 3.
The dialogues were horrible, and everything that I had loved about
SG-1, which was an action show in a scifi setting - was missing: SGA
was a scifi show with a little bit of real action thrown in, but that
got less and less. I like my real action and I despise the often way
too easy solutions that scifi offers.

But what I resented most was that everything I COULD have loved about
SGA, everything I wanted to love, was still there in the fanfic. SGA
had, and still has, some of the best fanfic ever. Every author I had
come to know and love in other fandoms suddenly came rushing to play
in the SGA sandbox. There were barely five episodes of SGA and it
already had better fanfic then most fandoms get in five seasons. And
here I was, completely in love with NCIS, which I still think of as
one of the best shows ever, trying to get people into the fandom for
years, even freaking writing for it myself - all with no
success...even SG-1, which has the most incredibly fandom ever, had to
wait for years to establish any kind of good fanfic to speak of.

And here came SGA, a show that mostly sucked, and got it all. Forgive
me for resenting it a little because of that.

I also feel rather ambivalent about Rodney McKay and his portryal in
fandom, and often baout John as well, but there is so much excellent
fanfic out there that I always find something that I love. Yes, I
still read (and listen to) SGA fanfic a lot. And I'm (mostly) a
John/Rodney OTP-gal. but I have never dared to rewatch the show, for
fear of being disappointed to much again.

6: Favorite episode of your favourite TV show.

Questions like that make you wonder if this meme was written by people
who ever watch tv. I mean, even if I had watched only one, short tv
show in my life, ay, Magnificent Seven, I wouldn't be able to make
that call. Maybe other people are better at deciding things?

But for the sake of the meme, I'll give it a try.

Stargate:
Since it is impossible to choose, I'll go by looks only. And
look-wise, the first one that comes to mind is probably The First
Ones. I loved how the color of the symbiote's blood brings out the
blue in Daniel's eyes, I love the Jack/Daniel dynamic, I love that it
is basically a J/D episode. I love the overall theme, the hidden
subjects (Rothman's death and how Daniel deals with it), and all the
fanfic possiblities it offers. There are many many other great SG-1
episodes, and there are many more J/D centric episodes, espeically
fic-wise - but I just love the overall look of that episode. (OMG I so
want to watch Stargate again. It's not going to happen, ten seasons is
too much of a cmittment right now, but I want it so so much!)

i'm not even going to pretend to try to chose episodes from other
shows. I could give you favourite scenes more easily than favourite
episodes. I couldn't even choose by season, and as soon as I name one,
I can think of another ten that I like just as much or better.

7: Least favorite episode of your favourite TV show.
That's a bit easier, because usually I like all episodes of the shows
I love, so there's really not much to choose from. With Stargate, this
would be either one of th Jack/Sam centric ones. I hated Divide and
Conquer, because of the look of betrayal on Daniel's face when Jack
"confessed" his feelings for Sam. Of course, J/D minded that I am, I
have explained all that away in my happy J/D world, and I have no
doubt whatsoever that Jack loved, loves Daniel and will continue to
love Daniel for the rest of his life (It's Daniel who needs a kick in
the head as reminder from time to time), but still, I hated that
episode. I've always resented the show for the Jack/Sam stuff, because
I always felt that there was a)no real chemistry between the
characters, and b) that it sort of weakened Sam as a strong female
character, because it was such a stupid thing for her to do, and I
just couldn't ever see Sam as a woman who'd pine away for a man she
could not, and should not, have, instead of just taking one she
actually could have. Plus, Daniel is obviously the love of Jack's
life, so there.

Still, I'd rewatch Divide and Conquer given the chance, because I made
my peace with theJack/Sam stuff long ago, and it's character
development, so it's important. What wasn't important, just totally
annoying, was that episode with the three nerdy scientist. I even
forgot the name, but if I ever rewatch Stargate (which I have and
which i will do again), I will skip that ep.

8: A show everyone should watch.
NCIS. Though it seems everyone is already watching it, if you believe
the numbers. People just don't write about it enough.

Day 9: Best scene ever.

Huh? There's no possible way of saying this. So many shows, so many
good scenes. But here's some great scenes that come to mind just like
that. Supernatural, the scene where Castiel's wings are shown during
his first meeting with Dean (onscreen), and the one where he and Dean
have sex on the backseat of the Impala, Dean's hands on Castiel's
shoulder blades, Castiel's back arching up so beautifully.

Human Target has the most spectacular action scenes, worthy of a James
Bond movie rather than a television show.

I loved Kate's death scene in NCIS, not despite it's abruptness but
because of it. Death is like that - no lon death bed confessions, no
reflections and saying goodbye. WHAM and you're dead, and that scene
came us such a shock, despite all the spoilers, and I just loved it.
(I was also too shocked to cry, and NCIS failed spectacularly in
dealing with kate's death later on, but hey, you can't have
everything.)

JAG had some brilliant flying scenes, so what if I get a rush if I
watch those? I lilke pretty, fast things.

Miami Vice has a scene of Crockett driving through the Miami night
in his (fake) old Ferrari while "In the Air Tonight" is playing,
which is far from being one of the best scenes ever, but it is such a
classic. I will always think of that scene when that song comes up in
the car.

Don shooting Chrystal in Numb3rs was perfect in showing the Don that I
was seeing in my head, excellent character-development in a more or
less simple short scene.

I could go on. (and I will if you give me the name of a show)

Okay, that's it for today. Feel free to drop in with your own
observations or to snag the whole meme if you feel like it.

More later, smooches,
Oceana
