I'm fresh out of surgery and the local anesthetic still hasn't worn off. Both teeth were on the right side of my mouth, which is now very swollen. I've strapped an ice pack to the side of my face and set my watch timer for 30 minutes. Doctor says 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off for the next 48 hours. I've been prescribed Roxicet for pain. I think I'm going to say it isn't working and see if I can score something stronger.
The doctor tried to persuade against using local anesthetic - he wanted to put me under for the surgery. I insisted on remaining conscious, but agreed to use nitrous oxide (thanks to Holly's expert suggestion!). The nitrous was interesting - it was a lot like ketamine. I felt heavy, my fingers and toes tingled, and I could clearly identify its dissociative qualities. I closed my eyes and actually enjoyed the pressure during surgery. One big difference between nitrous oxide and ketamine that I was able to identify was full muscle control. It didn't inhibit my ability to speak or coordinate movement.
It was over much sooner than I had expected. The nurse had me breathe oxygen for a few minutes afterward, which sobered me up very quickly. I think I would have preferred to sit in a dark room for a few hours instead, but hey.
I'm really hungry. Oh well. I guess now is a good time to fast and watch movies.
