The New Resource & Credit Post

Jul 20, 2007 20:03

This post compiles the various resources used by the nine designers at OI. wingedfigment made the first draft, and most of the comments throughout (particularly on the font sites at the very bottom) are hers. emmavescence ran this post for a while, and did a lot of work on it. Now I (enriana) maintain it.

And now, without further ado, I present to you...

The Big List of Credit and Resources

Stock Images

We get a lot of our images from stock image sites. I'll try and get a description up for them all soon. Temporary note: OI designers, if you use these sites, could you give me a brief comment about them? I mainly use Getty so I don't have a whole to say about the rest.

AGE Fotostock

Corbis
FreeFoto - good for browsing through categories.
Gettyimages - very powerful search. This is the most popular image search out there, definitely amongst our designers.

Stock Xchng
Workbook

NOTE: We do not endorse the use of high quality images from these sites! Some low quality images taken from the above sites may be incorporated in icons posted to this community, but equally, we might never post anything from any specific site. They're merely listed here as a stock photo resource, which our members might wish to peruse..

Bases

While we make a lot of our bases ourselves, sometimes we use those made by other people for our icons.

Brushes

Note: These also include image packs for incompatible programs unless otherwise stated. Most of these that are hosted on LJ are icon-specific. External sites tend to have general resources and large brushes, but those that also host icon specific resources are marked with an asterisk (*).

Help with Brushes:

-- How to install and use brushes in Photoshop7 and PaintShop Pro 7: here at icon_tutorial.

-- How to make brushes from image packs in Photoshop7: here at icon_tutorial.

-- An easier way to make brushes from image packs in Photoshop is to use actions. This post explains how to create your own actions for this, and this post provides a sample action, and also explains how to automate the process and define lots of brushes at once, using batch processing.

-- How to make brushes from image packs in PaintShop Pro 7: here at icon_tutorial.

-- How to convert PS 5, 5.5 and 6 brushes to use in PSP7 and below: rename *.abr to *.jbr. PSP8 and above uses .pspbrush, which means PS brushes are not directly compatible. PSP7, PSCS, and CS2 use a different type of brush, so they're not compatible with any versions of PaintShop Pro, or lower versions of Photoshop.

Textures

As a general rule, the LJ based communities and journals host icon sized textures, and the external sites host large textures. The external sites that also have icon sized textures are marked with an asterisk (*). Textures are images, so can be used with any image program. A tip for use: add textures to a new layer, and play with the blend modes and opacity.

Fonts

DaFont is our most frequently used source for fonts. A huge amount of our fonts come from this website. It's fabulously organized, easy to navigate, and has an overwhelming amoung of fonts. Most people could probably use DaFont and nothing else without the lack of variance showing up in their icons.
-- Some other good font sites include: Absolute Fonts for a huge collection. (Note: I rarely use this because I think it is poorly designed.)
Bitmap Fonts is the home of the 04b bitmap/pixel fonts, which are good to use on icons. Free to download, and they're available for both Windows and Mac.
Blambot for comic fonts.
Blue Vinyl Fonts, a site sometimes used by eofs.
Chank for a very small (but nice) selection of free fonts.
Font Freak for free PC and Mac fonts.
Font Garden for great handwriting fonts.
Fontastic! for a medium selection of fonts and a cute (if kind of gratingly bright) website.
High Fonts for a nice website & a modest amount of fonts.
Rhapsodic Type for a wide selection and great presentation.
The Scriptorium for good calligraphy and historical fonts.
Search Free Fonts for a good site design and a useful search engine.

For more great resources, be sure to check out Ventruechick's Big Goddamned Tutorial Page, The OI Tutorials and communities like icon_basics and icon_tutorial.

In addition, some LJ users have put together their own resource lists; here are links to some of them:
_jems_'s here.
dtissagirl's here.
feathered's here.
ignited's here.
quebelly's here.
