30 days of vidding meme - day 20

First time I bought shoes online... resounding success! Comfy and lovely winter motorcycle boots ftw!

Day 20 - Do you ever get ideas inspired from other people's stories, vids, or art in the same fandom?

I subconsciously plagiarise ideas from vids all the time, mostly if the vid made me see an element that I hadn't seen before, or a clip that supports a certain reading in a way I hadn't thought of. But it's subconscious plagiarism in the sense that I take in the new stuff and it gets built into how I see the source overall, so by the time it gets processed and regurgitated in a vid somewhere far down the line, it's hard to pinpoint where the idea came from in the first place, and I start to think I had thought it up entirely on my own.

Which links into the general idea of influence, of being Machiavallian (or at least Inception-y) in how you can just nudge an idea into someone's head, back away slowly and just watch how it permeates through their behaviour over days or months or years. It works much, much better than shouting your point of view at someone at point-blank range. It's kind of an intoxicating power, if unpredictable at times. (No, I haven't been experimenting this on random people, why do you ask? *shifty eyes*)

My relationship with fic is such that I only ever look for and read fic when I have a vid idea that I feel like I need to understand better in terms of character motivation, etc. So the vid idea will always come first, and the type of fic that I look for is usually a shortish one-shot that's incisively character-driven rather than plot-driven. Unless I start reading fic for leisure again at some point... but if I had the time, I'd probably prefer to watch the telly instead... and then watching the telly begets new vid ideas. It's a vicious cycle.
