*punches the air in triumph*
To be honest, Acts I and II left me a bit cold. Everybody on my friends-list was squeeing all over it but I could only help an occasional giggle and an overall "meh". Mind, Act II started going a bit dark toward the end and that was when I enjoyed it the most.
The first half of Act III was more of the same and you were expecting one kind of ending from the very beginning and then BAM, Joss does that Joss thing and then things go downhill and stay downhill, and the last five minutes just. gave me goosebumps.
Joss does funny well but you know what else he does well? Contrasting low comedy with high tragedy and showing how the scariest, most real villains are created out of geeky little men who used to be cute and funny once upon a time. I thought the ending was fucking brilliant and I'm so glad he went this route.
Also? Bad Horse's council room? MADE OF WIN.
ETA: Also? I personally don't believe this is any sort of comment about treatment of women. Joss just likes to kill happy couples, period. Remember Wash? It is not necessary to view everything through a gender lens all the time and I think yes, feminist meta could be read out of this but I honestly don't believe it was about that. I have my own opinions and I'm not letting the backlash harsh my squee. And that's all I have to say about that.
Also, finally went to see Prince Caspian last night.
It's been a long while since I've read the book. I can't remember anything that happened in it, except for the fact that half of it was retrospective exposition and that must have been changed for film purposes anyway, so... essentially I knew nothing. Oh, except for the adorable part where the bear said he won't suck his paws but ended up sucking his paws anyway.
First, SO glad they put in the bear sucking his paws. I missed half the fight scene because I was so busy looking at the bear in the corner. I'm glad they didn't make a big deal out of it and just inserted that for the people who were looking out for the paw-sucking from the book.
Second, gosh, they took some liberties, didn't they? The bit with the White Witch I finally turned around to M. and asked "was this in the book?" and he shook his head emphatically no. Apparently the whole bit with storming the castle didn't happen either. I need to reread my Narnia.
Third: god, this whole series is so dark. Yes, I get that it's one big Christian analogy and it's supposed to be dark. Nonetheless thinking ahead to The Silver Chair, Tashlan and the ending, it just makes my blood run cold. The bit where everybody dies and goes to heaven except Susan? One of the most brutal things I can ever imagine. I think Margaret Atwood(?) wrote a short story based on this.
Fourth: I need to make an Edmund vid. Gosh, I do have my types.
