On The Golden Compass:

I can tolerate how they treated the religious aspect. It wasn't as covered-up as I thought - as long as you knew what you were looking for, it came through pretty clearly. Although it is also true that they are going to have to step up their game if they plan to make the next two movies - I can't very well see how you could depict all the gay angels and killing God and the Second Original Sin from The Amber Spyglass by being this non-committal.

I can tolerate the fact that Mrs. Coulter's daemon is the ugliest fucking orange monkey I've ever seen in my life, despite all descriptions in the book to the contrary.

I can tolerate the great big gaping leaps of logic that is a blaring signpost of bad editing. "You're my mother? That means... Lord Asriel must be my father!" And you arrived at that conclusion how? But this kind of thing seems somewhat inevitable when you're trying to condense giant volumes down into a 2-hour movie. So I'm annoyed, but not overly so.

What I cannot tolerate, however, is how they CUT OFF THE WHOLE ENDING. As my friend Nina so delicately exclaimed at the end of the movie for all to hear, "What the FUCK just happened there?" Even my sister, who had never read the books, turned to me and asked, "Did the movie just... finish? It doesn't seem finished."

The whole book has been building to the payoff in the last chapter, the inadvertent betrayal and shocking violence. Instead, Lyra and Roger sail happily off into the sunset to swelling music, cue fade out. For a while I honestly thought they were going to cut out the character of Will altogether and perhaps make Roger the bearer of the knife.

Although I later found out they'd already filmed the ending, but for some unknown reason decided to keep it until the start of The Subtle Knife. If they make it. Apparently The Golden Compass hasn't been faring as well as they'd hoped, and there's a chance it won't make the numbers to warrant a trilogy. At the moment I don't know if I even want them to.

Eva Green is really hot though. Yay for saving graces. A shame that her character and Daniel Craig's character never meet - I don't think. *goes to watch Casino Royale again*

Ooh, edited to add a fab vid rec:
Winter in My Heart by raspberry_splat, humansrsuperior and leviathan101, Doctor Who, Ten/Rose.
Absolutely mesmerising overlay and colour work. More than that, though, like all great vids this has a real sense of emotion running through it. It didn't matter that I wasn't a Doctor/Rose shipper at all; the intensity of the vid, the flow and charge of it, still gave me the shivers. Recommended.
