Can't believe my last update was over a month ago... oops!
Just re read my last entry... moving on from that, I went to London and saw Nightwish at the Hammersmith Apollo. At that stage I'd say it was pretty much the best show I'd seen them put on. They all seemed very into the show and the pyros and confetti added to the atmosphere. Another boiling gig but enjoyable all the same. The band were mostly quite far back on the stage but still managed to get some nice shots.
Met up with some old friends and some new. Really enjoy travelling around to see the band because each time I've met the most amazing people.
After my trip to London I was rather ill and therefore didn't spend all that much time at the computer for a week or so. Finally started feeling better and went and photographed James Blunt. He's a very good singer but a little boring on stage for my liking :) Had an interesting support act by way of 'The Boy Least Likely To' and they were rather entertaining as well. Also photographed The Glitterati at the Mill. Another good performance but a shame about the lighting rig. Left little to be desired.
Since then I've also been to Finland... flew out a week last Thursday and stayed til Sunday just gone. Had the most amazing time and again met some really lovely people, including the 5 winners from Oceanborn. We all got on rather well and it made the trip that much better. We spent til the early hours of Friday morning in the bar and time wandering around Helsinki looking at all sorts. The gig was amazing and somehow they managed to surpass the show in London just a few weeks before.
Having only ever seen Nightwish play smaller venues in the UK it was a treat to see them playing at an Arena. I thought it may be strange but the atmosphere was just as intense as it would have been at a smaller venue out here. You could see there were going to be differences in the show from the outset with risers / platforms for them to stand on and pyros / confetti / etc were again used to full effect. Part way through the first section of the show the 'Once' backdrop fell and revealed a video wall. This made for an interesting addition to the show with ocean / books / lyrics and photos being displayed throughout each song. Everything throughout the show fitting in seamlessly. Tarja changed her outfits numerous times and came out for Nemo in her red jacket etc. John Two Hawks took to the stage and did a solo performance for one song whilst the band took a short break (they were playing a longer set). This then moved onto 'Creek Mary's Blood' and the band all joined him on stage.
Little did we know at the time but this would be Tarja's last performance with the band. What a performance to go out on though! They all outdid themselves and the DVD is definitely something for fans to look forward to. I for one shall be buying it when it is released, not only to relive the night but also to share with people that were unable to attend this truly awesome show.
Wednesday night saw me photographing The Rasmus again... another great show and the guys looked like they were having a great time :) I always enjoy photographing them and it was a pleasure to see them so into the show. They performed a lot from the new album and an impromtu version of Wonderwall was greeted with great enthusiasm from the crowd who carried on singing for them when they forgot the words half way through :) Had to leave earlyish though as was rather tired from the trip and hadn't quite caught up on sleep. Ended up stuck in motorway traffic on the way home and spent an hour extra on the road... should have watched the end of the gig after all! :) For those of you that like the Rasmus, go out and see them live! :)
