Life in Pai

The minibus dropped us off at the bus station in Chaing Mai at seven thirty. Everyone was impressed by the good time we made from Pai. Pai's only a little more than 130 km from Chaing Mai but you have to go through the steep and windy roads
through the mountains so it can take up to five hours depending on the mode of transportation. Pai is a prime backpackers stop in Northern Thailand. The word is it's changed loads in the last few years from a sleepy mountain town to a prime spot where backpackers go to "chill" sometimes for the rest of their life. It was nice, some parts reminded me of artsy communities in upstate NY, as their were lots of yoga, meditation, crystal healing, heal your energy, type places. We stayed in bungalows a little outside the city with an incredible mountain view
. The first thing we did after arriving there on Friday night was to rent motorbikes. The best thing about Pai, in my opinion, was the surrounding countryside. On Saturday we cruised the roads around the city, passing through some hill tribe villages, where the local women tried to sell us weed and opium, waterfalls
and elephant farms.
In the evening we would eat and go out to the hip foreigner bars in town. By Sunday most of us were ready to leave. We'd had a great time, but woke up late with hangovers and weren't ready for the groundhog day aspect of nightlife Pai. So after a monster lunch we left...
