Next Quarter

Mar 10, 2005 14:49

So I just received my teaching assignment for next quarter and it's English 367, the junior level composition class as opposed to 110 the freshman level (what I normally teach). I haven't qualified to do it yet, I was going to do that next week. I'm not sure how that's going to work out.

Point is, the theme for 367 is always the same: "The American Experience". Basically that means whatever the heck you want. I have been thinking of doing Science and Technology. Readings might include but are not limited to:

Jurassic Park
Frankenstein or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick
Introduction from A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
Who Will Save Society from Science? by Paul Feyerabend

Any other recommendations? I need more short readings and essays. What do you guys think of this idea? I would be eternally grateful for all input, Pro and Con, so be honest.

The funny thing is, this might give me my first chance to do what Jason and I always said we were called to do. We wanted to be in the secular schools and be the people who demolish peoples' faith in whatever idol they had erected (Make Every thought captive to Christ!!!). Since science and positivism seem to be the idols of our paradigm, the means by which "truth" is produced, I think that Feyerabend might be my first chance to give them something that will make their little heads implode.

Again, I need input from you all--criticisms, ideas, suggestions--calling all cars!

Love
Joshua
