So tomorrow I spend ten hours in three different airports and two separate flights, and then I'm in VT! Hurrah!
I love breaking through the clouds and seeing Lake Champlain for the first time. From the air, you can't tell how smelly and semi-polluted it is. Vermont from the air, especially when it's cloudy, looks like another planet to me, a cool swampy one like where Yoda lived in Empire Strikes Back.
I can't help romanticizing VT. I met another VT expatriate last night, and we agreed that to really love vermont, you have to leave it for a while and then come back. This year made me realize how essential it is to get away from home, if only for a while. Travelling and living far from home gave me a lot of perspective, both about Vermont and the world outside of it. There really isn't another place like it, at least that I in my oh-so-extensive travels have found. Actually, I felt a little bit at home in Scotland, and I think that's why I liked it so much. Scotland is like vermont with less trees and better accents. And kilts. Oh dear god, don't get me started on sexy men in skirts...
