[Challenge][Y][FF] Summary: He was forced to care for the dubbed monster under direct orders, and while his freedom was bounded, it was only then did fantasies spiral from his control.
-
"Let's start over again from the top because once is never enough. I can never get enough. No matter what you throw at me, I will stay until you tell me." The detective nearly yelled.
Sungmin stood in the far corner of the hospital room and watched silently as the man he directed the questions to remained silent.
The detective leaned in with an ugly scowl on his face. "You could die any moment. Even the doctors can't explain what's wrong with you. And you still won't tell me why?"
The patient spat at his face.
The moment the detective grabbed the patient's collar, Sungmin calmly stepped in. "He's still unwell. It'd be best not to hurt him any further."
The detective froze, seething and debating whether to ignore the nurse's warning or stop before he regretted it. He chose the latter and dropped the patient back onto the bed and stormed out of the room. Sungmin turned his gaze towards the patient who started laughing loudly.
"Insane." Sungmin said out loud. The patient instantly stopped laughing, but turn to grin widely in his direction.
"Isn't it time for my bed bath?" Yesung asked, almost excited by the prospect. Sungmin resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Still, he brought the products closer and proceeded with his job as he wrapped the towel around his fingers like a mitt.
He first cleaned his face with the small white towel. The patient stared intently at Sungmin as he gently wiped his face while Sungmin steadily refused to acknowledge the gaze. After he changed the towel, the bed was elevated to help Yesung sit up. A blanket was placed on his legs as the hospital gown was gradually lowered to reveal his upper torso. He only exposed the areas he was washing.
"I bet you're cuter when you smile." Yesung said, tilting his head to gain a better vantage view of his nurse.
"Is that your idea of a compliment?" Sungmin returned nonchalantly as he adjusted the gown. He felt Yesung nearly leaning against his shoulder, but did nothing to push him away because he was being calm at the moment. He was ordered not to do anything that may provoke him; giving him free reign because of his circumstances.
He had heard stories from his previous nurses. All of them outraged and afraid of this man because of his violent nature. Sungmin hadn't faced his wrath yet and for that sole reason, he became his nurse almost exclusively.
He lowered Yesung back onto the bed, continuing his job when he heard a slight clang. He looked down at Yesung's wrists. He noted that the deep gashes have yet to heal. If anything, they continued to deepen the more he tried to move them.
"Those won't heal if you continue to do that."
It had become a habit of Yesung to reach out futilely, hands trying to touch any part of Sungmin that was within his reach. The handcuffs that held him down to the metal bars of the hospital bed were the only thing that kept him from doing so.
Yesung smiled. "You care for my well-being."
"I'm a nurse. I have to care." He checked his wrists again and Yesung saw the opportunity to grab hold of his hand and took it.
"At least let me live out my fantasy." He chided, his thumb slowly stroking the exposed part of Sungmin's hand.
"You mean before you escape?" Sungmin asked, recalling the constant topic he had always brought up. Doubt still traced his voice and Yesung chuckled at his tone.
"I can escape whenever I want to. I'm simply biding my time."
"I'm sure."
Yesung tilted his head. "And if you were to know where I was, what would you do then?"
Sungmin pulled away his hand from his grip and threw the towels away in the used linen hamper as he put away the products into the basin. He turned away from Yesung's disappointed expression as he stepped towards the doors.
He looked back at the bed and answered before closing the door. "I’d turn you in."
-
He cursed himself.
He lowered his hand from the canvas before him, sitting on the lone chair within the abandoned small shack. His eyes glanced at the initial sketch he drew before he started painting and wished the image would change. In every sketch and revision he made, it had remained the same.
Each and every one of them depicted an image of a man's back whose face wasn't drawn. Two clear marks on his shoulder blades where a set of wings were carefully drawn. Looking at them, no one would assume it was an actual person. Only he alone knew exactly who the image resembled.
He remembered the first time he noticed those etched scars on his back, immediately prompting inspiration for his next piece. Since then, his sketches consisted only of the thought of wings forming. Almost like a reminiscent of an angel.
But Yesung was far from that.
Sungmin had only heard of the rumors and the gist of the many stories surrounding him, each of them as dangerous as the next. Yet Yesung didn't boast like the other prisoners he had come across. Nor did he exclaimed his innocence either. He had only seemed repulsed by the accusations hurled against him by the law. His countless crimes had made him far from this angel his drawings portrayed him as, but he couldn't reasoned with his muse as his inspiration soared. Angry with himself, he turned away from the sketch and looked at the wall beside him.
In this forsaken place were remnants of broken mirrors and bits of stained glass. He was never able to see clearly outside, only at his soiled reflection. It was only in this abandoned sanctuary was he able to completely lose his cold facade and act as he wanted. But it also allowed his thoughts to form freely without consequence.
His gaze returned reluctantly to the sketch. While he tried to pretend he couldn't recognize the man, his mind continually drifted off towards him.
-
He returned to work, finishing the last of some paperwork when he heard a commotion. He hurried over, recognizing the direction of the sound and the possibility of who caused it. As he turned around the corner, his suspicions were confirmed.
One of the nurses came out running from the room, completely hysterical as others tried to console her. She continued to wail as tears streamed down her cheeks. He heard only bits and pieces of what she said afterwards.
"...He's a monster..."
Sungmin rushed inside, surprised to see that Yesung looked anything but. If anything, he was just exhausted, as if his energy was drained from him completely. He had forgotten his initial curiousity and angrily confronted the officers outside, knowing they were the reason for this.
"What did you do to him?"
"None of your concern." The officer uttered. "Hurry up and do your job."
"If you would stop causing a havoc for him, he wouldn't have to stay for so long."
The other officer narrowed his eyes. "He's a criminal."
"He's also a patient. And I'm sure you want him back in your prison as fast as possible right? Then leave him be and let him rest in peace."
He returned soon after with the new towels, making sure to close the doors behind him and closed the blinds, not wanting to see them any longer than necessary.
Yesung didn't react to his presence. Had made no reaction or any of the usual gestures to suggest he even noticed him. Sungmin was slightly bothered by this. He elevated the bed once more and had to move Yesung as carefully as he could when the latter couldn’t sit up properly. His eyes remained closed as Sungmin washed his back.
"How did you get those scars on your back?" He asked, hoping that a logical answer would destroy his muse.
No reply.
Sungmin cleared his throat as he continued the job in silence, lowering the bed and laying Yesung back on his back. The nurse removed the towel mitt from his hand and tossed it into the hamper. Against his instincts, he traced his fingers against his cheek. At the sensation from his warm touch, the patient opened his eyes.
The familiar clang of metal rang throughout the room as Yesung tried to move his hands, but couldn't; his eyes lowered as he turned his head. Sungmin held his breath as Yesung brushed his lips against his hand.
Sungmin hastily jumped away from the bed and escaped from the room as quickly as he could. He heard the frustrated clangs of metal as he left and closed the doors, making sure that he at least seemed normal in front of the officers. He already left enough of his facade behind.
He tried to concentrate on the rest of his work duties, but his mind continually drifted off. More than once, someone had to snap him out of his trance. Yet when orders were given to check his vitals, Sungmin had no other choice but to return to that room. He hoped that he could return his stolid expression, and acted as if the man had no effect on him whatsoever.
He was surprised to see a frenzied group of officers running past him and nearly crashing into him. He easily sidestepped them as he walked closer to the room. The blinds were now open and through the glass window he realized what must had happened.
The hospital bed was empty.
He widened his eyes as the detective of the case turned around and met his eyes. He marched over towards him. "You! You must know where he went off to!"
Sungmin narrowed his eyes as the detective stepped even closer.
"That monster was obsessed with you. He would have told you. You must know!" He banged his fist against the wall, startling a couple of nurses.
He glared harder at the detective. The fact that he was being interrogated like a suspect fueled his anger. "I've dealt with worst people before. Don't think your intimidation tactics will work on me." Sungmin uttered. "Even if they did, I have no idea where he is."
"And you would tell us if he did?" The detective asked, his eyes studying his expression.
“Of course I would.” Sungmin replied without hesitation. The detective continued to stare him down. Sungmin wanted nothing more than to show this man his place but held back.
The detective, though frustrated, grudgingly accepted his answer and stalked off with rest of his force behind him.
-
Sungmin had skipped home when his shift ended during the early morning hours and opted to head for the shack instead. He walked through the mess inside and stood before his canvas in a solemn mood. He looked at the sketched lines and down at the materials below it. With a weary mind, he reached for his brush and determinedly dipped into the paint.
The skies outside gradually lightened as each stroke was brushed. As he finished the last of the tips, he pulled back and stared at his now finished painting. His hands reached out as they traced the familiar scars, eyes lowered at the thought of the man's escape and how much it bothered him. His attitude only encouraged the idea in his head that he indeed held some feeling for the man. He couldn't maintained that lie any longer.
He heard the distinct sound of metal clanging together.
He spun around on the spot, looking through the dark corners of the shack; frozen to the spot as he watched Yesung slowly came into view.
"What are you doing here?" He asked fearfully. He had never once told Yesung about where he lived. Much less where he spent time fulfilling his hobby. The stories and rumors had unconsciously resurfaced. His body tensed at the possible things this man could do, but he soon relaxed as he studied his appearance.
His face was pale as he walked closer towards him. He was still just as weak. It was during his final steps when he collapsed completely against him.
Sungmin fell to the ground at the sudden weight, but supported the other's body as well as he could.
"I have my ways." Yesung explained quietly. Sungmin heard how strained his voice sounded.
He also knew it was impossible, finding his vague explanation hard to believe because no one knew of this place. Absolutely no one. He pushed all thoughts out of his mind as he laid Yesung to rest against the wall, and without a word, he ran out of the shack. The prisoner stayed exactly where he was, breathing in slowly as he tried not to collapse entirely.
He opened his eyes weakly when he heard the distant sounds of hurried footsteps. He watched as Sungmin lowered himself beside him and wrap a blanket around his shoulders. The first aid kit opened beside him as he tried to help Yesung in any way that he could, all the while restraining his curiousity that begged to know how he escaped. Yet, as he glanced at the handcuffs, he felt almost afraid at the given clue. The cuffs weren’t cut through nor were they unlocked. It was as if they were broken by sheer strength alone.
He turned around to put away the supplies when he felt a weight against his back. He turned around to see Yesung lying comfortably against him.
He shifted his eyes. "You should return to the hospital and receive proper care. I can only do so much." He heard Yesung chuckled at the idea.
"Those hospitals do nothing to help me."
He tried to adjust himself as Yesung pulled him snugly against him. "Do you have something against the system?"
"Not at all. I'm sure they're helpful to the rest of you but they cannot heal me. Although I am grateful." He felt Yesung moved his hands across his back. Now that his hands were finally free, he was taking every chance that he could. "I would have never known you otherwise."
Sungmin cleared his throat. "If you wanted to escape, then why did you stay in the city?" His body tensed once again. Not from fear. But from the feeling of his hands as they snaked around his torso.
"I can't leave." He admitted quietly. "Not yet."
"Because you can't or don't want to?" Sungmin asked daringly. “Why bother to stay?”
The other smirked as he reached forward and grabbed onto his hands, stubbornly holding on despite his lack of strength. The cold feeling of the metal handcuffs made Sungmin shuddered. He bit his lip as Yesung brushed his lips against his neck.
Despite it all, Sungmin hadn’t dared pulled away.
"I have a feeling you already know the answer."
Yesung looked straight into the broken mirrors, able to see a distorted yet clear reflection. He was elated; assured, at what he saw.
"You see... Your smile is cute."
-
Sungmin continued typing as he glanced at the computers, filling in the information from the various patients he had visited. He was walking along the corridor while doing his rounds when he came across the familiar room.
A vague but fond smile formed on his lips as he recalled the scene that occurred earlier that day when he excused himself for his night shift at work. The other held him back for as long as he could, pulling him further back into those darkened corners, too familiar to the way the cold metal felt against his skin.
"What are you?" He had asked in a hushed voice, as if they weren't the only ones there.
Yesung had given no reply, a playful glint in his eyes as his hands reached for him. Before Sungmin could confirm his suspicions, the other had closed the distance between them.
He continued to watch as the officers had taken the last of the evidence they could possibly find and had scoured through their surveillance tapes and other sources. There was still not a single clue to indicate where he could've gone.
The detective, exasperated as he ran his fingers through his hair, walked over once more towards him from that empty room.
"I'll ask you one last time." His tone final but desperate, pleading for the nurse to know something. Anything. "Do you know where he is?"
Sungmin raised his eyes to meet his stern gaze.
He casually fixed his collar, the very one that hid the mark on his neck when he lowered his hands calmly by his side. He simply replied,
"Not at all."

A/N: It's vague. >< I always try to refrain from vague fics, but it stemmed for my initial love of them, most of my favorite stories in another fandom were vague supernatural stories and I guess that favoritism finally showed itself today. A part of me wants to write a second story to this, but from Yesung's POV and maybe clear up some things, but aiming to finish the backlog first.
I tried to ask my friend Rowyn for help on the nursing bits, Thank you btw ^^, and still apologize because I couldn’t really fit in all the specifics and technicalities for it. Also shows just how much I miss painting...I ended up combining two separate ideas for this one ><
