Those ideals aren't held for the shielded and naive alone. There still lie people that have been betrayed, hurt, defeated, ect, that share them. I personally find it wonderfully amusing that I had a cynical, pessimistic outlook on the world before I got royally beat up and kicked around by it, and now seem to have more hope and optimism than nearly everyone I run into. It's like a reversal of how you think it should be, and you don't know why! =)

Everyone gets hurt, lied to, fucked with, treated like shit, and all that entails. It's part of living. If you haven't been seriously hurt by someone, or something, then you aren't living. The sad thing is, most people these days seem to let that hurt override them. You end up with so many guarded, untrusting and fearful people. Perhaps it's warranted in some cases, but how it's warranted is not as a lifelong adoption of policy, so to speak. It's the sort of thing you should have until you're back upright again, and then head back out there. If you're so prejudiced along the way, you automatically write out so many things that have so much potential clear from your life.
